Design trends have always been ambivalent in nature, remaining unusually predictable and uncertain with every shift. As easily as they come, a trend emerges and seeps its way across the design branches effectively dictating the product selection and overall demand in the market.

Manila FAME, the country’s premier lifestyle and design event, has been witness to countless trends that has grazed the lifestyle and design industry. For its 66th edition on Oct. 20 – 22, the three-day trade event will explore product marketability and trends in its special setting, Design Commune, under the direction of internationally renowned designer Tony Gonzales.
Design Commune will feature items from more than 60 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) across the country and will center around four market-oriented themes based on mainstream trends: Greens, Blues & Whites, Ethnic Nomad, and Naturals.
“The Green has been coming strong for the last two or three years. Back then, it was influenced by people’s desire to cook. They become weekend chefs and everybody just loved to cook,” Gonzales explained.
“This time, the trend has shifted to gardening. Buildings have greenhouses on their rooftops, people grow herbs, cactuses, and succulents in their houses. We created a variety of pots to cater to this, anything for the garden that can also be used as a home décor.”
Gonzales comments that Naturals and Blues & Whites have long been mainstream influencers. Natural tones saw a rise in the fashion and lifestyle industry for its simplicity and versatility, while the Blues & Whites had been a constant driver of color choices for home décor, personal products, and gifts.
Meanwhile, Ethnic Nomad takes inspiration from one of the biggest macro trends of recent, travelling. As young adults have adapted the need to travel, they gravitated from the consumerism-filled lifestyle. This movement was then followed by fashion houses who continued to look to the organic beauty of the earth the vast cultures it holds.
“We’ve created a theme that takes inspiration from different ethnic cultures and colors without actively showing a particular country. It’s a mixture of ethnic influences. There’s a bit from South America and of course, from our very own Igorot and Tagbanwa,” said Gonzales.
Gonzales worked with a number of designers to support the product development stage of the companies. Tes Pasola, Detlef Klatt, Stanley Ruiz, Wataru Sakuma, Conrad de Leon, Leo Saño, and Reine Shih were among the Filipino designers who took part in Design Commune.
Products from A. Garcia Crafts, Asia Ceramics, Celestial Arts, Inc., Finali Furniture and Home Accessories, Kit Silver, Nature’s Legacy Eximport, and Prado Filipino Artisans among others will be featured in the boutique-style setting from October 20 – 22 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila.
“We didn’t design for ourselves as artists or designers. We designed for the companies as our way to support their livelihood,” Gonzales said.

Manila FAME, the country’s premier lifestyle and design event, closed its first day with the exciting announcement of the KATHA October 2017 winners at the World Trade Center Metro Manila, Pasay City.
Since its inception in 1990, the Katha Awards has stood as the hallmark of Philippine product design excellence and innovation. The special distinction is awarded to Manila FAME companies and designers whose products embodied the innovative design and material manipulation.
Here are the winners of the KATHA October 2017:
1. Designer Wataru Sakuma’s MasaEco Development Inc. brought home the Katha for best booth design
2. The Antipolo-based company Schema won the KATHA for Best Product Design (Furniture) for its Lilou Lounge Chair.
3. Industria’s metal Reef Panel won the Katha for Best Product Design (Home Décor).
4. The unique Carabao Horn Glasses of Elm’s Accessoria De Casa was named Best Product Design (Fashion).
This year’s judges included School of Fashion and the Arts Design Institute Dean Tobias Guggenheimer, Sohu Designs Chief Creative Officer Jennifer So Hu, fashion designer Jojie Lloren, Print & Magazine Vice President Suki Salvador, Heima Creative Director Rossy Yabut-Rojales, Gallego Architects owner Eduardo Gallego, and Design Center of the Philippines Executive Director Maria Rita Matute.
ANTONIO ‘BUDJI’ LAYUG is a globally acclaimed designer whose works can be seen in shops in Thailand, Malaysia and United States. He is a co-owner of BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+Design firm, and founding member of Movement 8, a group that made Filipino design shine in the global market in 1999.
Layug’s devotion to modern craftsmanship gave him success in utilizing bamboo for his designs. He is the first Filipino designer featured in Bloomingdale’s magazine for his Giant Bamboo furniture collection.
For more than three decades, the veteran designer has developed a holistic approach in combining innovative eclectic techniques and indigenous organic materials to build contemporary furniture with superior quality in form and function.
Layug will be the overall creative director of the 64th Manila FAME. He will also showcase his modern uptake of the “Philippine Chair” from 1900s in the ‘Icon: Peacock Chair Redux’ special setting exhibit.
NELSON SEPULVEDA is a world-renowned Chilean stylist, scenographer, and designer. For more than 20 years, he has served as a creative director for Studio Edelkoort Etc, an international trend consulting company based in Paris, France.
Sepulveda began his career as a make-up artist and consultant for major cosmetic brands. Later on, he was named art director of Bloom magazine, a trend revue about nature, flowers, and plants, and the way they impact design.
Since then he built several collections for design brands–Ay Illuminate, ABC Pottery, Cinq Étoiles–in different parts of the world. Subsequently, he has been traveling in Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, and several Asian countries to help artisans gain deeper understanding in crafting works that reflect their inner soul.
For the October edition of Manila FAME, Sepulveda will help develop designs for Philippine handcrafted baskets using natural materials in the ‘New Generation Weaves, Basketwork, and Related Wares’ exhibit.
STANLEY RUIZ is a multi-awarded international designer and the creative director of Estudio Ruiz Design Consultancy, a design studio he founded after working in Bali, Indonesia, and New York City.
Ruiz has been involved in seven editions of Manila FAME as a product specialist, assisting Philippine manufacturers in creating globally competitive and export-quality products.
This October, he is working with the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP) and nine local manufacturers to brighten up the 64th edition of Manila FAME through their ‘Lucent Objects’ exhibition. His special setting is the result of several months of experimentation with indigenous materials – such as corn husk, peanut shell, palm husk, pandan leaves, anabo fiber – and turning these materials into lighting objects.
WATARU SAKUMA is a Philippine-based, Japanese designer recognized for his intricate organic pulp art. He is currently the president of Masa Ecological Development, Inc. (Masaeco), a Cavite-based pro-people and pro-environment company known for its paper artistry.
A graduate of Memphis College of Art and at the New York Studio Program, Wataru already made a name in international exhibits held in the US, Taiwan, Germany, and Japan.
In his creations, Wataru uses even the most basic materials to craft functional yet artistic pieces for urban living. Evident in his work is his profound respect for nature and an innate ability to see the beauty inside discarded or overlooked materials.
For the 64th Manila FAME event, Wataru completes the creative ensemble with architectural firm Manosa & Company, Inc with the gamut of exquisite to practical décor pieces—all crafted from the many functional parts of the coconut tree.
REY LUCIANO SOLIVEN is a multi-awarded Filipino artist and educator with more than 20 years of expertise in industrial product and design consultancy for international and local trade fairs.
Soliven honed his artistic expertise and knowledge by having virtually traveled almost every region in the Philippines, where he gained insight on innovative local techniques, as well the lifestyle of local artisans. He also observed best practices in the international exhibits by working with clients in the US, and key European and Asian countries.
Having dedicated more than half of his life in arts and crafts, this 45-year-old artisan professes a deep commitment to developing the craftsmanship of fellow Filipino artisans. In the 60th Manila FAME, he curated exhibits to develop the craftsmanship of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Philippines.
This coming October, Soliven will once again work with local craftsmen in the ‘Materia:Bamboo’ exhibit to showcase the practical use and innate flexibility of bamboo materials.
HYBRID, an art and design group composed of Jinggoy Buensuceso, Wataru Sakuma, and Stanley Ruiz, joins the 62nd Manila FAME this 15-18 October 2015 for a lighting installation that is conceptualized and developed to promote the Philippines’ unique interpretation of light—capitalizing on Filipino artisans’ design skills, creativity, and high-quality craftsmanship. The installation is also made in in celebration of United Nations’ proclamation of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies.
Buensuceso, Sakuma, and Ruiz collaborate on “Aurora—A Light Imprint,” an installation that fuses light and time to form an enchanting 3D imprint mid-air that mimics the colors of the Aurora Borealis, a natural phenomenon of bright dancing lights of the aurora that result from collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere. These three designers explore materials to create objects that exist between (and beyond) furniture, product, sculpture, architecture, and media arts. They also adhere to process as the essence of their collaboration.
Using glow sticks that are activated and chain-linked to each other, the designers will place short-term light sources on structured panels, hanging in mid-air from the ceiling of the SMX Convention Center. The structured panels provide an impression of free-flowing movement in mid-air, while the flat, black panels above them serve as the night sky background against the activated glow sticks. The Northern Lights-inspired installation is in an enclosed setting to allow Manila FAME buyers and guests an immersive experience on the use of light-based technologies to translate messages to consumers.
HYBRID wants to promote lighting as more than just illumination. They want to initiate an exploration of art designs that capitalize on light-based technology. HYBRID hopes to strengthen the lighting industry in the Philippines, by providing a source of inspiration that can spark innovative ideas from the sector.
Jinggoy Buensuceso is a visual artist and sculptor whose works, characterized by the use of clean lines with organic forms, evoke stories and statements of oneself, culture, and way of life. A three-time Mugna awardee, Buensuceso is considered an emerging figure in furniture design where he has created functional art pieces meant to evolve design into art.
Wataru Sakuma is a Philippine-based Japanese designer who has four KATHA Awards under his belt. His “REBAROQUE” collection, in collaboration with Stonesets, a furniture manufacturer in Cebu, was awarded the Mugna Transitional Design Award.
Stanley Ruiz has been working in the design industry since 1999, developing products for manufacturers in various regions of the world, including China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. His recent project includes a newly-released lighting collection for the Cebu-based manufacturer HIVE.

Different minds, myriad of ideas, and varying materials skillfully brought together to form a perfectly unified whole. This is what best describes the work of Stanley Ruiz, Jinggoy Buensuceso and Wataru Sakuma in the special setting called “Light & Shadow” at Manila FAME, slated at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City on 13-16 March 2015.
Recognizing the market opportunities presented by the global lighting market and in celebration of the United Nations’ proclamation of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based technologies, Manila FAME tapped three ”gypset” designer-artists with uncommon design instincts; to give their own interpretation of the age-old interplay of light and shadow through their own designs. Working closely with a select group of manufacturers, these designers found themselves undertaking personal passion projects to bring to life their ideas and highlight the expertise of their partner companies.
“CITEM and Manila FAME are very proud of the synergy we have nurtured with the Philippines’ brightest design talents. Through Light & Shadow, we are likewise redirecting awareness of the Philippine exporters on the range of possibilities and opportunities in the global lighting market,” said CITEM Executive Director Rosvi Gaetos.
“The modular pieces allow for exploration, combination, play, reconstruction. The design presents limitless potential and infinite possibilities,” said Stanley Ruiz who collaborated with Bon-Ace Fashion Tools, Inc., MASA Ecological Development, Inc. (MASAECO), Prado Filipino Artisans, Inc., Triboa Bay Living by Vivere Lifestyles Company, Inc., and Venzon Lighting Manufacturing, Inc. for his special setting.
Jinggoy Buensuceso’s design principle is not just to create products which are already aesthetically excellent, but also serves a higher function. He works with Cancio Contract Furniture Corporation, Industria Home Vico Manufacturing Corporation, P&B Valises et Compagnie Inc., Shell Arts Company, Inc., and That One Piece Enterprise. “We have to start thinking differently about lighting and how we can manipulate it. We can bend it and throw it but the big difference is when you marry it with lines and organic forms to create a theatrical play of light and shadow. This is when we are brought to another dimension and into an elevated experience,” says Buensuceso.
Wataru Sakuma identifies the material as the cornerstone of his design process. “They are all of same shape, yet they are different. One shape transformed into multiple and distinct works through the utilization of the uniqueness of various materials, each with their own strengths just waiting to be realized. My own understanding of each material, a personal level of relationship, manifested in each and every piece.” The Philippine-based Japanese designer collaborates with CSM Philippines, Inc., E. Murio Inc., and South Sea Veneer.
As other Asian countries are now introducing their designs to the global market, the strength of our material together with the daring nature of Filipino and Philippine-based designers in exploring new territories, are what set it apart from other countries. However, there are still several facets which have room for improvement. “The Philippines need to have a more solid design culture which requires the involvement of the government to provide venues for public exhibition and to tap the media to capture the interest of the public,” says Ruiz.
Manila FAME is a global platform to the country’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which features certified, export-quality products such as furniture and furnishings, holiday décor and gifts, garments and fashion accessories designed and crafted in the Philippines for the global market. Red Box is a program which develops aspiring designers to penetrate the market. One such story is a group of designers who named themselves Epoch, began as young, unknown designers of functional items for companies 4 years ago and are now successful manufacturers themselves. Their story, The Return of the Epoch, will be featured in a special setting aptly called “ The Light & Shadow” lighting installation. Appropriately timed with the UN General Assembly proclamation of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015), it presents the collaboration of designers Stanley Ruiz, Wataru Sakuma, and Jinggoy Buensuceso with select companies to feature the growing sector of lamps and lighting.
Sure to draw fashion enthusiasts is Manila Wear, which will unveil Luxe fashion collections derived from a group of fashion designers who uses indigenous materials to create bespoke items. Manila Wear is a branding initiative which aims to position the Philippine fashion industry in the market.
Still aimed at promoting local exports in the world market, the Manila FAME International Hall brings together under one roof exhibitors from different countries, tapping the international as well as the local markets. It provides a fresh sourcing venue for trade buyers from around the world who come regularly to Manila FAME.
Fortifying CITEM’s commitment in upholding the global competitiveness of Philippine products, on the other hand, is the One Town, One Product (OTOP) program of the Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT) of DTI, a priority project of the government to promote entrepreneurship and job creation in the country’s various regions. This edition, OTOP manufacturers will team up with designers to showcase latest collections from different regions.
