The Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), which recently entered into a partnership to help secure the foothold of Philippine design and architectural enterprises in the global scene, reinforced their alliance by supporting each other’s signature events, Manila FAME April 2016 and UAP CONEX (Convention Exhibits) 2016.
During its three-day run, UAP CONEX 2016 featured the Manila FAME Pavilion, which exhibited some of the best furniture, lighting, and home accents crafted by Filipino manufacturers. Meanwhile, UAP CONEX delegates visited Manila FAME during its opening day, in support of the trade show and the Philippine design industry.
Through the DTI-CITEM and UAP partnership, Manila FAME and Philippine MSMEs can create new networks and strengthen their current connections to UAP’s 27,000 members as well as the leading architects and builders worldwide who are linked with UAP through significant organizations such as the UIA (Union Internationales des Architectes or International Union of Architects) and ARCASIA (Architects Regional Council). World-renowned Chilean designer Nelson Sepulveda to participate in Manila FAME October 2016 edition
Chilean designer, scenographer, and stylist Nelson Sepulveda presents his creative ideas on his would-be special setting in the October edition of Manila FAME during his recent visit in the 63rd edition of the trade show this April. He spoke about the importance of ‘romanticizing the handmade and abstracting everyday objects’ in doing design before a group of students, exhibitors, members of the press, and representatives of the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP) and the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM). For the October 2016 show edition, Sepulveda will collaborate closely with the international trend consulting company Edelkoort Etc. to develop designs for Philippine handcrafted baskets using natural materials, with the possibility of expanding the product lineup to include other everyday objects.
RIPPLES Plus highlights globally competitive SMEs at Manila FAME
The Regional Interactive Platform for Philippine Exporters (RIPPLES) Plus is a partnership program of the Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) with the Department of Trade and Industry-Regional Operations Development Group’s (DTI-RODG) Export Pathways Program (EPP). It enables the regional and provincial staff to handhold potential exporters through capacity-building trainings and provides direct interventions (e.g., product designs, market info seminars, compliance with market requirements, export marketing activities, and international trade fair participation) to potential and existing exporters enrolled under the EPP. The program aims to expand the supply base of globally competitive products and services as well as increase Philippine exports and international market shares. The Artisans Village tells the stories of crafts from the islands
Lifestyle designer PJ Arañador teams up with product specialists Imelda Datul and Rachel Dagñalan in a creative collaboration with the local governments, regional offices of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and 45 SMEs from Albay, Cagayan, Davao, and Laguna. The Artisans Village plays a significant role in protecting, preserving and promoting the arts and crafts of the islands. It aims to celebrate the work of local artisans and master craftsmen highly skilled in weaving, wood carving, metal forging, and other various forms of traditional crafts. The Artisans Village at the 63rd Manila FAME is open until April 24. It remains to be one of the favorite trade show highlights of Manila FAME trade buyers and guests alike.

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Convention Exhibits (CONEX) Organizing Committee presents a token of recognition for CITEM’s participation in CONEX 2016 at the Manila FAME Pavilion in SMX Convention Center. HallONE’s Manila FAME exhibit highlights the versatility of coco coir
HallONE teams up with DTI regional offices of CALABARZON, Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PHILFIDA), Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), and the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP) in presenting a special exhibit that explores new applications of coco coir as a raw material for home, lifestyle, and fashion products, amid its existing horticultural uses in the country. A complementary material showcase, featuring other Philippine indigenous materials that are just as versatile and available for sourcing, provides the backdrop for this exhibit.
Sen. Aquino supports the startups sector
Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, Chair of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship, speaks on the second day of the Slingshot Philippines 2016 conference recently concluded at the Philippine Trade and Training Center (PTTC) in Pasay City. Aquino said that it’s high time to “kick-start changes and catapult the Philippines into the future” in order to be at the forefront of inclusive growth. A government-initiated platform for public dialogue and partnership, Slingshot Philippines 2016 is a national summit and exhibit which aims to develop the Philippine startup and innovation ecosystem.
Electric vehicle makes waves in Slingshot Philippines 2016 exhibit
The electric quadcycle known as “eQUAD” is one of the products of innovation featured at the Slingshot Philippines 2016 startup exhibit mounted at the PTTC recently. eQUAD is one of the first locally designed, manufactured, and mass produced electric vehicles by the Philippine Utility Vehicle (PhUV) Incorporated, the umbrella organization of companies and institutions that pioneered the electric vehicle industry in the Philippines. The exhibit targeted startup exhibitors from the following groups: funders and accelerators; startup/social enterprises, education services, and co-working spaces/incubators.

HYBRID, an art and design group composed of Jinggoy Buensuceso, Wataru Sakuma, and Stanley Ruiz, joins the 62nd Manila FAME this 15-18 October 2015 for a lighting installation that is conceptualized and developed to promote the Philippines’ unique interpretation of light—capitalizing on Filipino artisans’ design skills, creativity, and high-quality craftsmanship. The installation is also made in in celebration of United Nations’ proclamation of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies.
Buensuceso, Sakuma, and Ruiz collaborate on “Aurora—A Light Imprint,” an installation that fuses light and time to form an enchanting 3D imprint mid-air that mimics the colors of the Aurora Borealis, a natural phenomenon of bright dancing lights of the aurora that result from collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere. These three designers explore materials to create objects that exist between (and beyond) furniture, product, sculpture, architecture, and media arts. They also adhere to process as the essence of their collaboration.
Using glow sticks that are activated and chain-linked to each other, the designers will place short-term light sources on structured panels, hanging in mid-air from the ceiling of the SMX Convention Center. The structured panels provide an impression of free-flowing movement in mid-air, while the flat, black panels above them serve as the night sky background against the activated glow sticks. The Northern Lights-inspired installation is in an enclosed setting to allow Manila FAME buyers and guests an immersive experience on the use of light-based technologies to translate messages to consumers.
HYBRID wants to promote lighting as more than just illumination. They want to initiate an exploration of art designs that capitalize on light-based technology. HYBRID hopes to strengthen the lighting industry in the Philippines, by providing a source of inspiration that can spark innovative ideas from the sector.
Jinggoy Buensuceso is a visual artist and sculptor whose works, characterized by the use of clean lines with organic forms, evoke stories and statements of oneself, culture, and way of life. A three-time Mugna awardee, Buensuceso is considered an emerging figure in furniture design where he has created functional art pieces meant to evolve design into art.
Wataru Sakuma is a Philippine-based Japanese designer who has four KATHA Awards under his belt. His “REBAROQUE” collection, in collaboration with Stonesets, a furniture manufacturer in Cebu, was awarded the Mugna Transitional Design Award.
Stanley Ruiz has been working in the design industry since 1999, developing products for manufacturers in various regions of the world, including China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. His recent project includes a newly-released lighting collection for the Cebu-based manufacturer HIVE.

Over 400 Philippine small and medium enterprises are ready to transact business and close export deals with more than 5,000 foreign and local wholesale and retail buyers and visitors for home, fashion, and lifestyle products in the upcoming October 2015 Manila FAME exhibition.
The participating SMEs in Manila FAME have been rigorously improving their products—diversifying and ensuring the quality of their output to secure a top spot in the highly competitive global market. With the devaluation of China’s currency creating an economic boost that spans the Asia-Pacific region, these SMEs which are highly involved in the export industry are expecting a growth trend that will continue over the coming months.
SMEs play a significant role in the economy, accounting for 99.6 percent of the country’s businesses and employing around 70 percent of the Philippine workforce. Empowering and supporting SMEs by providing them various platforms for brand-building and global export is therefore imperative to the growth of the economy.

The Light & Shadow, Red Box, and Manila Wear will present newly crafted lighting, fashion accessories and apparel, and furniture crafted by emerging Philippine talents who will be the future of design. These programs gather young, promising designers from all parts of the country and urge them to expand their capabilities, master their skills, and create innovate products that reflect their unique design sensibilities.
The Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure will exhibit the new products of 21 Philippine export companies manufacturing dinnerware and table accessories. These products have been developed for the international market through the assistance of German consultant Detlef Klatt who will also curate the exhibit. The companies participating in this platform are established firms with years of experience in the export industry and stable clients from abroad.
