With the success of the Cycle 1 of the RED BOX design program, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) has managed to highlight the promising brilliance of the young Filipino design talents at the Manila FAME October 2015 edition and in select trade shows in London, Milan, and New York. Due to the heightening interest among designers, CITEM has announced the extension of the submission of entries for Cycle 2 to 16 September 2016.
The RED BOX design program is a platform to discover and train young designers to become the next generation of movers and shakers in the home and fashion industries. The application is open to Filipino product designers aged 21 to 30 years old who have not yet received major home- or fashion-related awards.
Since 2014, RED BOX Cycle 1 Grand Winners for the Home and Fashion Sectors, Thian Rodriguez, Micki Olaguer, Kit Blancas, and Jim Torres, together with 10 other finalists, underwent an in-depth immersion in their respective industries. The program includes attendance to seminars and workshops on design and business; exposure to craft techniques through regional factory visits; first-hand learning experience from world-renowned design icons such as Kenneth Cobonpue and Josie Natori; and, development of product collections in close collaboration with manufacturers.
Their training came with an extraordinary opportunity to be mentored by the country’s designers of premier caliber – Budji Layug for furniture and home accents, and Lulu Tan-Gan for apparel and fashion accessories.
“The Philippines is full of talented young creatives. RED BOX opened its doors to them, so they can further develop their skills under the mentorship of Filipino design icons,” CITEM Executive Director Rosvi C. Gaetos states.
RED BOX Cycle 2 aspires to send more promising designers to international trade fairs such as International Fashion Showcase in the United Kingdom, Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Italy, and International Contemporary Furniture Fair in the United States of America next year.
CITEM has partnered with the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), a technical agency of the Department of Trade and Industry, mandated to promote industrial design as a tool for improving the quality and competitiveness of Philippine products. The partnership between CITEM and DCP aims to sustain development of the next generation of Philippine designers.
Applicants may submit entries for any of the following categories: furniture; home accents; apparel; and fashion accessories. Only one entry for a maximum of two categories will be accepted. CITEM calls on Filipinos aged 21 to 30 years old who have not yet received major home- or fashion-related awards to bring their passion and talent for design to a higher level through the RED BOX program.
The RED BOX program is a platform to harness talents and nurture them to become the next generation of Philippine designers. From its first cycle, four young designers were awarded as grand winners, and represented the Philippines in select trade shows in London, Milan, and New York City.
“RED BOX started out as a show feature of Manila FAME in 2011. Designers featured back then were handpicked by CITEM to showcase their creations in the trade fair. Three years later, RED BOX has evolved into a designer development program,” CITEM Executive Director Rosvi C. Gaetos shares.
“The Philippines is full of talented young creatives. RED BOX opened its doors to them, so they can further develop their skills under the mentorship of Filipino design icons,” Gaetos adds.
The RED BOX design program is now open for applications to the second cycle of its search of Philippines’ next design talents.
In 2014, RED BOX introduced a shortlist of 14 design talents who were trained and guided by Budji Layug for furniture and home accents, and Lulu Tan-Gan for apparel and fashion accessories.
The design talents underwent an in-depth immersion in the local home and fashion industries, including seminars and workshops on design; exposure to craft techniques through regional factory visits; and development of product collections in close collaboration with manufacturers. Cycle 1 of the RED BOX program culminated with the designers’ collections showcased in Manila FAME October 2015, where a jury selected the grand winners based on a prescribed criteria.
Thian Rodriguez, who considers being named as RED BOX Cycle 1 grand winner for Fashion Apparel as the most memorable highlight in his career as a designer, is grateful to be part of the program. “The program helped me widen my perspective in arts and fashion. Red Box helped me find my own identity as a designer and build my own name in the industry,” he says.
Rodriguez cites the mentorship under Lulu Tan-Gan, and the exposure to fashion design principles, the industry, and the market as great learning experiences that developed his craft. Rodriguez is one of the four designers who represented the Philippines in the International Fashion Showcase (IFS) in London, United Kingdom in February this year.
Jim Torres, RED BOX Cycle 1 grand winner for Home, also attributes his growth as a designer to the industry exposure, shares that it is through the RED BOX program that he was able to discover his design identity by interacting with different people such as clients, manufacturers, and co-designers.
“You must know how to adapt—that’s why Red Box is a mentorship program. Being a designer is more than just designing and building things; it’s about being able to communicate and inspire through design,” Torres adds as an advice to aspiring, young designers. Torres’ Escapade collection, a lighting installation made of shredded stainless steel, was featured in the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York, USA in May 2016.
Cycle 2 of the program will also give aspiring talents the opportunity to participate in international trade fairs, workshops or short courses.

The RED BOX Design Talents 2015 Fashion finalists try their hand at devoré, a fabric technique that uses chemicals to “burn” a semi-transparent pattern on a solidly woven fabric.
Manila FAME, the country’s premier design and lifestyle event, returns to its April season to bring the global trade buyers to the optimal buying cycle at the World Trade Center in Pasay City on April 21-24. For its 63rd show edition, the trade fair evolves into a boutique show featuring a more sophisticated, more exclusive and tightly curated show.
With the theme “Iridescence,” a portrayal of the colorful character of the design and lifestyle event of Asia, Manila FAME will headline an ever-growing showcase of export-quality Philippine designer pieces for the home, holiday, and fashion sectors in a well-coordinated boutique setting. It is organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
“Manila FAME is more than just a trade fair. It is a journey of discovery of globally responsive products that celebrate color and style under one roof. Buyers who visit Manila FAME on a regular basis always comment that they enjoy and benefit from the multi-dimensional experience that only Manila FAME offers,” said Rosvi Gaetos, the executive director of CITEM.
Spring Forward and Y’ARI are Manila FAME’s special highlights this April under CITEM’s Design for Exports program, a multi-tiered and multi-faceted assistance program which provides Philippine exporters, manufacturers, and designers with a full range of design and product development services. The program brings together both local and international designers and business experts, as well as both young and seasoned industry players to create finely crafted products in the home and fashion sectors designed for the global market.
Spring Forward will showcase handpicked local creations from the country’s craftsmen, artisans, and young designers. Furniture designer and interior design consultant Ito Kish will ‘reimagine’ the season of renewal through a symphony of greens and hanging light bulbs, brought together by solid black marble table tops that puts focus on the versatility and the potential of Philippine products.
Y’ARI will highlight the intersection of artisanal production in various Philippines villages and the interventions used to modernize this production, with Marian Roces as lead curator. The exhibition will showcase textiles, accessories, and ornaments crafted from native materials such as piña silk, beads, pearls, and gold to convey the level of quality that is being matched by modern transformations. With a haute design concept on hand, the exhibit will depart from typical trade show approaches.
Trade buyers and visitors will also get to experience the Philippines’ distinct character and rich inventory of traditions and talents through The Artisans Village, which aims to protect, preserve and promote the arts and crafts of the islands. It aims to celebrate the work of local artisans and master craftsmen highly skilled in weaving, wood carving, metal forging, and other various forms of traditional crafts.
As in previous Manila FAME show editions, Red Box will continue to inspire design enthusiasts with an inspirational showcase of fresh home and fashion ideas. Red Box is a design development that continues to develop junior designers through an ongoing talent and development and mentorship program. For the April 2016 edition, Red Box will feature the iconic designs of junior designers Joseph Rastrullo and Rachelle Dagñalan who will develop a conceptual display based on Manila FAME’s theme “Iridescence,” under the mentorship of Budji Layug, the creative director of Manila FAME.
The presence of OTOP (One Town, One Product) manufacturers will once again highlight handcrafted products made by skilled Filipino craftsmen from various local communities. It is a project of the DTI-Bureau of Domestic Trade Promotions (DTI-BDTP).
Manila FAME will coincide with the celebration of Design Week Philippines (DWP), which fosters connections between creative industry practitioners and design enthusiasts in an interactive sharing of knowledge, ideas, and trends.
Now on its 9th bi-annual staging, Design Week Philippines will provide “the richest, most exciting, most meaningful ways to group, gather, and bond people.” The theme for April 2016 is “Connection” which refers to the creative attempt to bring together people from diverse backgrounds and culture to interact and share their creativity with each other, with Intramuros as DWP’s first design district.
Manila FAME is the second-longest running trade show in the Asia Pacific. It is the only trade event in the country approved by the Union des Foires Internationales (UFI), or the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, a Paris-based association of trade fair organizers founded 90 years ago in Milan, Italy on 15 April 1925.

The prestigious design development program initiated by DTI-CITEM culminated last night, 15 October 2015, with the awarding of the four grand winners out of the 140 aspiring designers who joined the competition. Under the mentorship of celebrated design icons Budji Layug and Lulu Tan-Gan, the four winners together with 10 other finalists, were immersed in a unique and intensive design and development process involving in-depth industry exposure and close collaboration with manufacturers.
Red Box aims to nurture the next generation of Philippine designers. In every edition of Manila FAME, Red Box continues its work with emerging talents by matching them with local manufacturers to create fresh concepts that reflect their unique design sensibilities.

Culmination of a one-year design dev’t prog
From over 140 aspiring designers, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), introduces its 14 finalists in the Red Box Design Talents, a platform to discover and nurture young designers that aims to produce breakthrough Philippine design talents by 2017.
“To strengthen the Philippine’s reputation as ‘Asia’s Design Destination,’ we should continue nurturing and inspiring young designers to make great strides in showcasing their design ingenuity,” said Rosvi Gaetos, executive director of CITEM.
Under the mentorship of celebrated design icons Budji Layug and Lulu Tan-Gan, the 14 finalists were immersed in a unique design and development process involving in-depth industry exposure and close collaboration with manufacturers. The result is a renewed understanding and intimate knowledge of the process of design, material and craft techniques.
The Furniture and Home Accents finalists of Red Box learned the art of woodworking from Pampanga’s Betis Crafts Inc./ JB Woodcraft, Triboa Bay Living and South Sea Veneer. Ms. Leslie Bituin-Mendiola, owner of Betis Crafts, Inc., stressed the importance of knowing the target market in the design process, while Mr. Randy Viray, owner of Triboa Bay Living, explained the significance of discovering one’s identity as a designer, urging the talents to “live and breathe design.” At South Sea Veneer, they witnessed and learned about veneer cutting and application. The finalists also strengthens their metalwork skills at Venzon Lighting Manufacturing, Industria, and Prizmic & Brill.
“An artist creates for himself. A designer creates for another entity,” explains Mr. Jude Tiotuico of Industria of the difference between an artist and a designer. Mr. Matthew Brill of Prizmic & Brill emphasizes the importance of understanding the material and the designers to understand the production costs when collaborating with exporter-manufacturers.
The Furniture and Home Accents finalists acquired exposure to materials in Cebu from Bon Ace, Obra Cebuana, and Nature’s Legacy, and gained deeper understanding of the design process from Vito Selma, Kenneth Cobonpue, and Cebu Fil Veneer.
In Bohol, the finalists discovered how technology such as 3D printing can aid their prototyping process through the assistance of FabLab Bohol Team, composed of representatives from the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) -Bohol, local designers, and volunteers from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Josie Natori, internationally acclaimed Filipino designer and CEO and founder of The Natori Company, opened her doors to the Fashion finalists for an opportunity to learn about the production of high-end fashion garments, allowing them a tour on a large garments production house to witness the intensive labor and the different stages of manufacturing process.
To broaden their perspective on tradition, a recurring theme in design, and its inspiring adaptation into contemporary works, the Fashion finalists proceeded to the Metropolitan Museum of Manila to witness a prestigious showcase of indigenous and contemporary designs of French and other international artists at the International Festival of Extra Ordinary Textiles (FITE).
The Fashion finalists learned Discharge Printing and Wrinkled Pleating in a two-day workshop on Fabric Treatments and Manipulation, under Lulu Tan-Gan and Ms. Vie Alvarez, a textile expert and instructor under the Fashion Design and Merchandising (FDM) Program at the College of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. They also attended a Trends Briefing and Workshop on Decorative Finishing for Fashion Accessories, led by Design Center of the Philippines Design Division Head Luis Manalang and Resource Person Marilyn Munio.
The Fashion designers learned the handmade footwear production from Ai-She Footwear. This involves processing of raw materials, pattern-making, cutting, and stitching; shaping and lasting; and finishing and packing. The finalists also participated in the bakya making of RTC Woodcraft.
Apart from the workshops, The Red Box Design Talents attended seminars on Elevating Filipino Artistry in Modern Fashion by JC Buendia, Integrating Filipino Aesthetics in Contemporary Design by Felipe De Leon, Jr., and Reinventing Filipino Craftsmanship by Rita Nazareno.
“A most striking quality of Philippine ethnicity or traditional cultures is their great creative diversity and richness,” De Leon stressed during his talk.
The pioneer batch of Red Box Design Talents will exhibit their collections developed in collaboration with local manufacturers at the October 2015 edition of Manila FAME slated October 15-18 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City. The showcase is a culmination of a year-long design journey. At the same time, it is a glimpse into a work in progress. A panel of distinguished industry experts and stakeholders will determine the winning designers from each category.
The finalists under the Furniture and Home Accents sectors are Viktoria Laguyo, Mariel Lazo, Edward Sibunga, Kristel Blancas, Diana Ramirez, and Jim Torres.
For the Fashion Apparel and Fashion Accessories categories, the finalists are Leby Le Morìa, Thian Rodriguez, JM Rosario, Vince Tolentino, Jeffrey Manahan, Jelvin Mujar, Micki Olaguer, and Michille Sabulao.
Organized by CITEM, the export promotions arm of DTI, Manila FAME features finely selected furniture and home furnishings, holiday gifts and décor, and fashion accessories designed and crafted in the Philippines for the global market. It continues to inspire with a strong statement on what is design-forward, popular, artisanal, and soulful.
Over 400 Philippine small and medium enterprises are ready to transact business and close export deals with more than 5,000 foreign and local wholesale and retail buyers and visitors for home, fashion, and lifestyle products in the upcoming October 2015 Manila FAME exhibition.
The participating SMEs in Manila FAME have been rigorously improving their products—diversifying and ensuring the quality of their output to secure a top spot in the highly competitive global market. With the devaluation of China’s currency creating an economic boost that spans the Asia-Pacific region, these SMEs which are highly involved in the export industry are expecting a growth trend that will continue over the coming months.
SMEs play a significant role in the economy, accounting for 99.6 percent of the country’s businesses and employing around 70 percent of the Philippine workforce. Empowering and supporting SMEs by providing them various platforms for brand-building and global export is therefore imperative to the growth of the economy.
The Manila FAME exhibition will show on 15-18 October the outcome of several continuous development platforms designed to help SMEs create a niche in the international market.
The Artisan Village, NeoTextiles Philippines, and OTOP Marketplace will showcase the heritage crafts of Albay, Laguna, Cagayan Valley, Davao Region; various natural fiber products; fabrics handwoven by indigenous groups from southern Philippines; and home and fashion merchandise made using traditional materials and techniques. These special platforms for grassroots organizations and craft communities in the rural areas aspire to nurture the traditional arts and crafts industry in the provinces and to help these groups to sustain livelihood by updating their merchandise, establishing a brand, and preparing them for business transactions with global companies.
The Light & Shadow, Red Box, and Manila Wear will present newly crafted lighting, fashion accessories and apparel, and furniture crafted by emerging Philippine talents who will be the future of design. These programs gather young, promising designers from all parts of the country and urge them to expand their capabilities, master their skills, and create innovate products that reflect their unique design sensibilities.
The Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure will exhibit the new products of 21 Philippine export companies manufacturing dinnerware and table accessories. These products have been developed for the international market through the assistance of German consultant Detlef Klatt who will also curate the exhibit. The companies participating in this platform are established firms with years of experience in the export industry and stable clients from abroad.

The design journey continues for Rachelle Dagñalan, Gabriel Lichauco, Lilianna Manahan and Joseph Rastrullo as they showcased the results of their design challenge at the recently concluded 61st Manila FAME
For this edition, the Red Box talents used the the show window concept to capture unique design aesthetic and language. Blurring the boundaries between design and art, each show window provided a glimpse of the designers’ minds and their collaboration with their partner manufacturers. Manila FAME Creative Director Budji Layug oversaw this creative process.
A proud native of Albay, Rachelle Dagñalan took us on a personal journey as she dug deep into her roots and used her intimate knowledge of the province to work alongside local artisans, designers and manufacturers in partnership with the Provincial Government of Albay PTCAO (Provincial Tourism & Cultural Affairs Office). Her setting featured a fresh approach on the province’s abundant raw materials and traditional crafts.
Gabriel Lichauco took inspiration from the controversial postmodernism movement by fusing patterns, colors and materials in his entire structure-object installation. Four different artisanal techniques were highlighted in a singular surface – lahar lamination, marquetry, carving and hand veneering – which provided a didactic approach to his design. South Sea Veneer Corporation, a furniture and wood veneer panels manufacturer based in Pampanga, worked with Gabby in this setting.
Curiosity was the base of Lilianna Manahan’s design and turned the world of her imagination into reality by staging a safari-inspired setting which infused her capsule collection for the home. With a touch of whim, she explored the material language of the Philippines to express her craft. Featured in this setting are collaborations with Prizmic & Brill, Basket & Weaves and TAN-GAN.
Exploring material transparency and translucency, Joseph Rastrullo experimented on fibers, resin, iron, wood, and plastic, and the potential combination of these. In this setting, he focused on the subject of his exploration through different ways of manipulating material such as glass and acrylic, playing and exploring on forms and textures.
Red Box is a design development program aimed at harnessing talent and creating the next generation of Philippine designers. It introduces and nurtures emerging talents from various disciplines of design, with potentials to become the new corps of young designers and artists.
While developing Philippine talents, Red Box also simultaneously assists the country’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in their product development.
The 61st edition of Manila FAME ran from March 13-16, 2015 at the second level of the SMX Convention Center.
