CITEM Extends RED BOX Design Program Entry Submission to September 16

With the success of the Cycle 1 of the RED BOX design program, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) has managed to highlight the promising brilliance of the young Filipino design talents at the Manila FAME October 2015 edition and in select trade shows in London, Milan, and New York. Due to the heightening interest among designers, CITEM has announced the extension of the submission of entries for Cycle 2 to 16 September 2016.

The RED BOX design program is a platform to discover and train young designers to become the next generation of movers and shakers in the home and fashion industries. The application is open to Filipino product designers aged 21 to 30 years old who have not yet received major home- or fashion-related awards.

Since 2014, RED BOX Cycle 1 Grand Winners for the Home and Fashion Sectors, Thian Rodriguez, Micki Olaguer, Kit Blancas, and Jim Torres, together with 10 other finalists, underwent an in-depth immersion in their respective industries. The program includes attendance to seminars and workshops on design and business; exposure to craft techniques through regional factory visits; first-hand learning experience from world-renowned design icons such as Kenneth Cobonpue and Josie Natori; and, development of product collections in close collaboration with manufacturers.

Their training came with an extraordinary opportunity to be mentored by the country’s designers of premier caliber – Budji Layug for furniture and home accents, and Lulu Tan-Gan for apparel and fashion accessories.

“The Philippines is full of talented young creatives. RED BOX opened its doors to them, so they can further develop their skills under the mentorship of Filipino design icons,” CITEM Executive Director Rosvi C. Gaetos states.

RED BOX Cycle 2 aspires to send more promising designers to international trade fairs such as International Fashion Showcase in the United Kingdom, Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Italy, and International Contemporary Furniture Fair in the United States of America next year.

CITEM has partnered with the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), a technical agency of the Department of Trade and Industry, mandated to promote industrial design as a tool for improving the quality and competitiveness of Philippine products. The partnership between CITEM and DCP aims to sustain development of the next generation of Philippine designers.

Applicants may submit entries for any of the following categories: furniture; home accents; apparel; and fashion accessories. Only one entry for a maximum of two categories will be accepted. ASEAN to Unveil New Creations by Master Craftsmen at Manila FAME October 2016

The ASEAN countries are now in full-scale preparation for the highly-anticipated ASEAN Master Craft Design Festival which will reveal the revolutionary crafts developed by the Master Craftsmen of the region.

Inspiring new designs and progressive applications of native materials and traditional techniques are up for public viewing at the upcoming Festival, to be held concurrently with design and lifestyle event Manila FAME on October 20-22, 2016 at the World Trade Center and the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City.

A key component of the festival is an exhibit dubbed “ASEAN Crafts to the World”, which will stage the first collection of crafts developed through the project “Improving the Current Status of ASEAN Mastercraft Designers.”

The project, initiated by the ASEAN Handicraft Promotion and Development Association (AHPADA) and PHILSMED’s Chair, Dr. Mina Gabor, was endorsed by the National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA) through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and funded by the ASEAN – Republic of Korea Future Oriented Cooperation Program. Its thrust is to “strengthen and enhance the use of design in reinforcing cultural identity in design development, merchandising, packaging, and marketing of ASEAN products by supporting and sustaining the Master Craftsmen in the region.”

New home furnishings, gifts and housewares, garden accessories, and fashion merchandise by the first group of ASEAN Master Craftsmen Roselyn Long Lah (Malaysia), Al Valenciano (Philippines), Lim Masulin (Indonesia), Truong Phi Duc (Viet Nam), and Rush Pleansuk (Thailand) will be the highlight of the exhibit curated by Indonesian architect Cosmas Gozali. To date, 103 new craftsmen have been trained in the five ASEAN countries.

The Master Craftsmen from the second set of ASEAN countries Brunei, Cambodia, Laos PDR, Myanmar, and Singapore will observe the exhibit and prepare for the project’s next phase which will then feature their collection of crafts.

Al Valenciano, who has dedicated himself to the craft of Inabel, traditional textiles from the Ilocos province, is the Philippines’ Master Craftsman. Together with four other master craftsmen from Indonesia, Malaysia, Viet Nam, and Thailand, Valenciano will present new creations developed under the project established through the cooperation among AHPADA, PHILSMED, NCCA, DFA, and ASEAN-ROK. The presentation, themed “ASEAN Crafts to the World” is a special feature of Manila FAME, the Philippines’ premier event for design and lifestyle exports, to be held on October 20-22 at the World Trade Center and the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City.

PH Coco Coir now a sustainable and marketable material for export

HallONE, the year-round sourcing facility and creative space of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Mission (CITEM), proved coco coir as a unique, sustainable, versatile, and marketable manufacturing material by generating more than PhP 20 million potential export orders of coco coir products at the recently concluded 63rd edition of Manila FAME last April 21-24, 2016 held at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.

Uplifting the humble fiber from its traditional use in horticulture and soil management, HallONE showcased newly developed and innovative coco coir products for the home, fashion, lifestyle, and seasonal décor, drawing remarkable interest from its local and foreign buying companies and receiving a total of 213 inquiries during the Manila FAME event. The HallONE exhibit featured resort footwear, ladies’ shoes, Christmas ornaments and table tops, mats, carpets, mattresses, hanging and table lamps, vases, magazine organizers, storages, pet products, side by side with its traditional applications in the country.

In cooperation with the regional offices of the country’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), and the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), the newly developed coco coir products were designed and produced by the Philippine exporters and manufacturers from the home, fashion, lifestyle, and agri-industry sectors based in the provinces of Laguna, Quezon, and Bicol. These include Pilipinas Ecofiber Corporation, Coco Technologies Corporation, R. Cabrera’s Gifts and Collections, Charles and Clara’s Footwear, Ai-she Footwear, Jhaz Footwear, Sarilikha Handicrafts, Yarnyaa Handicrafts, Likhang Liliw Footwear Cooperative, Rolyolikha Atbp. Handicrafts, KAP-WESL Multipurpose Corporation, Martha’s Handicrafts, and Sowerscrafts Enterprises.

Miniature animal ornaments with strings and sticks, and animal-inspired Christmas trees made from coco fiber and coco peat were among the fast-selling products during the show, along with the ladies’ sandals, men’s slippers, beehive and nipa hut-inspired hanging lamps, cat houses and toys, and doormats as secondary favorites by foreign and local retailers and wholesalers.

“The products are very interesting and cute. The use of coco coir as raw material is something new to us buyers,” said Margie Adrada, a Filipina based in Seattle, who owns five Dekorasyon retail stores in the US, and never fails to visit every Manila FAME for product sourcing.

Initial orders from the US, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Japan were also placed through HallONE, while some serious orders are under negotiations with possible factory visits from Russia and Norway.

“It’s very surprising that the coco coir products would get this much attention and interest from foreign buyers and even from the local community. This is our first time to participate in this event, and we’re extremely happy with the outcome,” said Ramonito Bernales of Martha’s Handicrafts.

Besides the exhibit, HallONE’s Material Showcase, in partnership with the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), the Philippine Coconut Authority (PhilCOA), and Timbermate-HMT Industries Corporation, also attracted buyers who checked and studied the featured raw materials available in the Philippines. The guests found the information from the books, magazines, and the online material database prepared during the exhibit very helpful especially with regard to each of its biological origins, production characteristics, supplier information, and relevant application and manipulation techniques.

“It’s an excellent showcase! Exhibiting the materials that can be found in the Philippines is a very good idea. I’m very happy that I was able to see and feel each of the local raw materials that are being utilized in this event,” Charles Ting, a CEO of a company who manufactures wall coverings from Taiwan, exclaimed.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) staged just recently Slingshot Philippines 2016, the National Summit on Startups and Innovation, at the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC) in Pasay City, kicking off a two-day national summit on startups and innovation with the theme, “Accelerating the Innovation Economy.”

The two-day summit provided an opportunity to gather under one roof young minds with big ideas, innovators in constant pursuit of new things to benefit their community, supportive investors who fund start-up ideas and the policymakers whose role is to provide an enabling business environment.

Breakout sessions are also conducted regarding topics on mentoring and coaching, programs for startups and innovators, and business development strategies for startups.

The event kicked off national consultations for the crafting of policies and programs to develop a new breed of innovative enterprises, covering the fields of agriculture, biotechnology, electronics, and digital startups, among others.

Around 50 speakers and panelists spoke on issues concerning funding, the current status and the future of Philippine startups, and strategies towards a Philippine innovation economy before 577 conference delegates who gathered at Slingshot Philippines 2016 to actively take part in a government-initiated platform for public dialogue and partnership that will help boost the development of Philippine startups for a robust innovation economy.

“Changing the ecosystem and putting in place policies responsive to the needs of the innovativion economy will not happen overnight. However, close collaboration of the government and key players will enable the Philippines to foster the desired new breed of business more quickly and efficiently. We want the next big tech startup to come from the Philippines ,” said Trade Secretary Adrian Cristobal, Jr.

Secretary Cristobal, a steadfast advocate of MSMEs as an integral part of the country’s pursuit towards regional economic integration and the attainment of equitable and inclusive growth, pointed out the government’s main role in the upbringing of the innovation economy. DTI has started implementing programs such as Slingshot to help overcome the hindrances that constrain the growth of MSMEs as well as provide startups and innovative businesses an environment that will nurture their capabilities.

In 2015, the Philippine government and startup community unveiled a roadmap which will serve as a framework in building a thriving ecosystem in the next few years. From a hundred, the country targets to have 500 startups with total valuation of USD2 B by 2020. This roadmap also serves as the basis for Senator Paolo “Bam” Aquino IV’s Startup Bill which is set to be filed at the 17th Congress in July. This proposed policy will exempt startup entrepreneurs from paying taxes in their first two years, enabling an inclusive growth to their budding business.

For three years in the senate, Senator Aquino has been the forerunner of six startup-friendly policies that support the innovation community. Among these are the Go Negosyo Act (RA 10644) which initiates the establishment of ‘Negosyo Centers’ that create linkages to bigger markets and financing as well as provide jobs and livelihood to people, the Microfinance NGOs Act (RA 10693) which supports the groups that guide and empower micro entreprenuers, and the Youth Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy Act (RA 10679) which builds a culture of entrepreneurship as an alternative solution to unemployment and underemployment.

“Why (support) MSMEs? Because we must. Our MSME sector is at the forefront of pushing the growth of the Philippines,” said Senator Paolo “Bam” Aquino IV, chair  of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship.

For her part, Trade Undersecretary Nora Terrado of the Industry Promotions Group (IPG) commended the local economy’s unyielding growth despite the many challenges the country faces with the global economic slowdown. “We have gained momentum, but we can do more. We realized from our dialogues with the private sector that our country can benefit from a far-reaching and scalable innovation within a well-planned, well-organized government supported frameworks,” said Terrado.

Over the past few years, the Philippine economy has shown a promising ground for the startup community. In 2015, the country jumped 83rd in the Global Innovation Index, 17 notches higher from its previous rank in 2014. Bloomberg Businessweek also revealed that the Philippines’ ranked sixth among the top countries where talents are being sourced.

Featured in the Slingshot Philippines 2016 exhibit mounted at the PTTC is the electric quadcycle known as “eQUAD,” one of the first locally designed, manufactured, and mass produced electric vehicles by the Philippine Utility Vehicle (PhUV) Incorporated.

The current status of the Philippine economy will serve as a viable launching pad for local startups and innovators to make it in the global market. The country is the second fastest-growing economy in Asia next to China and it currently flourishes from a positive business climate, a population of young, English-proficient speakers; and the stable remittances from overseas Filipinos.

Slingshot Philippines 2016 was the direct offshoot of Slingshot Manila 2015, the official startup and innovation event for the Philippines’ hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organized by the DTI in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and other key industry stakeholders.  It was held in conjunction with the recently concluded 63rd edition of Manila FAME and Design Week Philippines (DWP).

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Convention Exhibits (CONEX), ongoing at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City until 23 April 2016, features the Manila FAME Pavilion, as part of a partnership that aims to fortify the Philippine design and architectural enterprises’ foothold in the global scene. CONEX is the Philippines’ premier building and construction exhibition. It coincides with the 63rd edition of Manila FAME, a bi-annual showcase of craftsmanship, design innovation, and artisanship in Philippine products.

Handcrafted furniture, home décor, and accessories from different Philippine regions get a design update through the Partner Province Program of CITEM in collaboration with internationally acclaimed designer PJ Arañador.

With support from PJ Arañador, lifestyle designer, local manufacturers from Cagayan Valley, Laguna, Albay, and Davao are getting ready to exhibit their finest furniture, home décor, and accessories at The Artisans Village in the boutique edition of Manila FAME this April.

The Artisans Village is a partner province program that aims to help regular and new Manila FAME exhibitors market their products in the global export scene. It is organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), in partnership with LGUs (local government units) and different DTI regional and provincial offices that share CITEM’s aim to promote island crafts and celebrate Filipino craftsmanship.

The new products will be showcased at The Artisans Village, one of the highlights of the Manila FAME April 2016 Boutique Edition, to be held on April 21-24, 2016, at the World Trade Center Metro Manila, Pasay City.

Arañador leads The Artisans Village as the program’s creative director. He is the owner of the PJ Aranador Design Studio One; the Nautilus Boutique in Boracay; WAWA, Iloilo’s First Heritage Restaurant; and Escuela de Artesanias de las Filipinas, a crafts school. His creations are sold across Asia, Africa, North and South America, Europe, Australia, the Caribbean, and Middle East. Arañador is an international environmental design activist and a consultant for Go Green Philippines, an environmental program that aims to revitalize the Philippine ecosystem and uphold the country’s fashion accessories industry. He is a leading social design entrepreneur in the Philippines, helping the poor in many rural communities through crafts production. He also advocates trade fair, ethical livelihood, preservation and advancement of indigenous materials, and innovative use of traditional techniques with green technology. He has been an exhibit curator for fairs in Colombia, Peru, and India.

Arañador is conducting visits to Cagayan Valley, Laguna, Albay, and Davao to hold product development and one-on-one prototype checking sessions, with the assistance of seasoned design and product development specialist Imelda Datul, and rising designer Rachelle Dagñalan.

In addition, Arañador is coaching the exhibitors on the ins and outs of the export business, covering topics such as identifying the target market; selecting the right colors for products; determining the proper pricing and costing; marketing the products offline and online; executing product displays; and handling operations, income, and billing. As a mentor, Arañador not only focuses on the technical side of business, but reminds the exhibitors to be vigilant against frauds as well.

With 25 years of professional experience in designing and exposure to products and designs around the world, Arañador believes that one of the factors that sets Philippine products apart from those of other countries is the resourcefulness or ingenuity of the Filipinos. “While the technology may not be as advanced, with so much less, we become very creative. And I think that’s a good position because crafts are after all made by hand. That’s when the soul of the products reflects more,” he said.

HallONE introduces innovative crafts made from coco coir

The Philippine coconut coir industry is envisioned as a globally competitive and modernized sector that champions inclusive growth for its stakeholders. In 2014, it reported a 104% increase in approved projects that provide necessary machinery, equipment, tools, systems, skills, and knowledge to coco coir farmers and manufacturers, and a 33.59% increase in domestic sales on the same year.

To support this long-term vision, HallONE, the year-round sourcing facility and creative space of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Mission (CITEM), embarks on a product development project in collaboration with the regional offices of the country’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), and 10 coco coir manufacturers and designers to showcase new and possible opportunities for coco coir as raw material for home, fashion, lifestyle, and seasonal decor. The project includes product exhibits in Manila FAME and HallONE facility, which will feature resort footwear, Christmas ornaments, wall panels, mirrors, mats, carpets, mattresses, lighting, and pet products, on top of current agricultural and horticultural applications in the country.

“HallONE’s collaborative coco coir project will provide a platform for Philippine manufacturers and designers to explore innovative uses of coco coir, which is a versatile and sustainable raw material in the Philippines, the country being the second largest coconut producer in the world,” CITEM Executive Director Ms. Rosvi C. Gaetos said.

CITEM HallONE’s special exhibit will also include a Material Showcase, featuring 64 Philippine materials that are just as readily available for sourcing. This material showcase will be supported by an online database at the HallONE website, allowing CITEM stakeholders to access relevant production information about each material such as its physical characteristics, biological origin, suppliers, and available trainings on material application and manipulation techniques.  

“Through the years, Philippine craftsmanship has advanced through groundbreaking designs and products that take advantage of the country’s wealth of natural resources and raw materials.
