DESIGN FOR EXPORTS EXCELLENCE. In the recently concluded 60th edition of Manila FAME, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) recognized exporters and designers through the Katha Awards, considered as a prestigious award in the Philippine design scene. Its goal is to give distinction to ingenious designs and encourage exporters to raise their design standards for Philippine export products and to pursue a skillful exploration of new materials/processes. The Katha Awardees for October 2014 are B-Luxe Chair by Ito Kish of ITO KISH (Best Product Design for Furniture); Flutty Candy Light by Jude Tiotuico of Industria (Best Product Design for Home Décor); Calli-Ideal Design by Tessa Nepomuceno of Tixxi Handbags Mfg. (Best Product Design for Fashion); Paper Finials by Arlene Gaddi-Maceda and Arthur Gaddi of Paper Capers (Best Product Design for Holiday Décor and Gifts); Schema (Best Booth Display); and Crystal Clock by Wataru Sakuma of MASAECO (Special Citation: Eco-Design Award). The opening day of the 60th Manila FAME concluded with the Katha Awards Ceremony at the Welcome Reception at HallONE: Design for Exports, the year round showcase of the Center of International Trade Expositions and Missions, located at the International Trade Center Complex, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City.
The Katha Awards is a hallmark of Philippine design excellence through the recognition of product design and innovation that combine the ideals of form and function. It is a prestigious award given to exhibitors at Asia’s premier design & lifestyle event, encouraging exporters to raise their design standards for Philippine export products and to pursue a skillful exploration of new materials and techniques.
Hosted by Issa Litton , TV and events host , the night was opened with opening remarks from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Ponciano C. Manalo Jr. Next up, came a speech from Gregory Domingo, Secretary of DTI.
Issa Litton also announced the news regarding the launch of the new Manila FAME mobile app under Guidebook. The app is available for download at the App Store and Play Store, featuring everything you need for the 60th Manila FAME in the palm of your hand.
Exhibitors, buyers and CITEM employees applauded the winners of this year’s Katha Awards trophies designed by Wataru Sakuma and Jinggoy Buensuceso.
Winning Best Product Design for Furniture was ITO KISH’s B-Luxe Chair by Ito Kish. As for Best Product Design for Home Décor, Industria took the award for its Flutty Candy Light by Jude Tiotuico. Paper Capers won the Best Product Design for Holiday Décor and Gifts for their Paper Finials by designers Arlene Gaddi-Maceda and Arthur Gaddi. Tixxi Handbags Mfg.’s Calli Ideal Design by Tessa Nepomuceno won the Katha Award for Best Product Design for Fashion. Schema won the award for Best Booth Display. MASAECO’s crystal clock by Wataru Sakuma, the same designer who designed the Katha Awards trophies, won the Eco-Design Award.
