Manila FAME, the Philippines’ premier lifestyle and design event, is set to make waves again among international and local buyers as it returns on October 20-22 with a range of new show features and artisans in a showcase of the country’s rich cultural heritage and design ingenuity.
The 66th edition of Manila FAME will strip down to its roots to present a show built upon the intertwine of the country’s rich cultural heritage and design excellence and the promotion of Philippine products. Artisans from across the country will showcase their best products at the World Trade Center Metro Manila and the Philippine Trade and Training Center in Pasay City across the three-day event.
“For this edition of Manila FAME, we put focus on how our culture has influenced generations upon generations of Filipino artisans. Manila FAME has always stood as a canvas to which the best of Philippine lifestyle and design talents embellish their work to showcase the country’s vibrant and multi-layered cultural heritage,” said CITEM Executive Director Clayton Tugonon.
Led by Paris-based design specialist Nelson Sepulveda, New Generation Weaves pays homage to Philippine indigenous and natural materials.
No less than eight show features will be included in the upcoming show. New Generation Weaves, a staple of Manila FAME for the past three editions, will return with Paris-based design specialist Nelson Sepulveda at the helm. Sepulveda will work with more than 30 small and medium enterprises to invoke harmony and balance through Philippine craftsmanship and the beauty of natural raw materials.
GREAT Women Project 2 will also return to highlight the works of women artisans across the country. The project was launched by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) in partnership with the DTI Project Management Team and is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency.
World-renowned designer Tony Gonzalez will also have his own curated setting that will marry the strengths of each Manila FAME participant to create a versatile collection made to match a variety of material requirements, techniques, and price points. Design Commune: Patterns and Palettes will be presented in four themes: Blues and Whites, Ethnic Nomads, Green Tinted, and Natural Black and White.
“Small and medium enterprises from across our country will join us in October to showcase the best artisanal products the Philippines has to offer,” Tugonon added. “Through Manila FAME, we will work towards supporting the success of our artisans and uplifting the Philippine brand internationally.”
The Center for International Trade expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is the proud organizer of the Manila FAME – the second longest-running trade show in the Asia-Pacific, and the only trade event in the Philippines approved by Union des Foires Internationales, a Paris-based association of trade fair organizers founded 90 years ago in Italy.

ANTONIO ‘BUDJI’ LAYUG is a globally acclaimed designer whose works can be seen in shops in Thailand, Malaysia and United States. He is a co-owner of BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+Design firm, and founding member of Movement 8, a group that made Filipino design shine in the global market in 1999.
Layug’s devotion to modern craftsmanship gave him success in utilizing bamboo for his designs. He is the first Filipino designer featured in Bloomingdale’s magazine for his Giant Bamboo furniture collection.
For more than three decades, the veteran designer has developed a holistic approach in combining innovative eclectic techniques and indigenous organic materials to build contemporary furniture with superior quality in form and function.
Layug will be the overall creative director of the 64th Manila FAME. He will also showcase his modern uptake of the “Philippine Chair” from 1900s in the ‘Icon: Peacock Chair Redux’ special setting exhibit.
NELSON SEPULVEDA is a world-renowned Chilean stylist, scenographer, and designer. For more than 20 years, he has served as a creative director for Studio Edelkoort Etc, an international trend consulting company based in Paris, France.
Sepulveda began his career as a make-up artist and consultant for major cosmetic brands. Later on, he was named art director of Bloom magazine, a trend revue about nature, flowers, and plants, and the way they impact design.
Since then he built several collections for design brands–Ay Illuminate, ABC Pottery, Cinq Étoiles–in different parts of the world. Subsequently, he has been traveling in Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, and several Asian countries to help artisans gain deeper understanding in crafting works that reflect their inner soul.
For the October edition of Manila FAME, Sepulveda will help develop designs for Philippine handcrafted baskets using natural materials in the ‘New Generation Weaves, Basketwork, and Related Wares’ exhibit.
STANLEY RUIZ is a multi-awarded international designer and the creative director of Estudio Ruiz Design Consultancy, a design studio he founded after working in Bali, Indonesia, and New York City.
Ruiz has been involved in seven editions of Manila FAME as a product specialist, assisting Philippine manufacturers in creating globally competitive and export-quality products.
This October, he is working with the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP) and nine local manufacturers to brighten up the 64th edition of Manila FAME through their ‘Lucent Objects’ exhibition. His special setting is the result of several months of experimentation with indigenous materials – such as corn husk, peanut shell, palm husk, pandan leaves, anabo fiber – and turning these materials into lighting objects.
WATARU SAKUMA is a Philippine-based, Japanese designer recognized for his intricate organic pulp art. He is currently the president of Masa Ecological Development, Inc. (Masaeco), a Cavite-based pro-people and pro-environment company known for its paper artistry.
A graduate of Memphis College of Art and at the New York Studio Program, Wataru already made a name in international exhibits held in the US, Taiwan, Germany, and Japan.
In his creations, Wataru uses even the most basic materials to craft functional yet artistic pieces for urban living. Evident in his work is his profound respect for nature and an innate ability to see the beauty inside discarded or overlooked materials.
For the 64th Manila FAME event, Wataru completes the creative ensemble with architectural firm Manosa & Company, Inc with the gamut of exquisite to practical décor pieces—all crafted from the many functional parts of the coconut tree.
REY LUCIANO SOLIVEN is a multi-awarded Filipino artist and educator with more than 20 years of expertise in industrial product and design consultancy for international and local trade fairs.
Soliven honed his artistic expertise and knowledge by having virtually traveled almost every region in the Philippines, where he gained insight on innovative local techniques, as well the lifestyle of local artisans. He also observed best practices in the international exhibits by working with clients in the US, and key European and Asian countries.
Having dedicated more than half of his life in arts and crafts, this 45-year-old artisan professes a deep commitment to developing the craftsmanship of fellow Filipino artisans. In the 60th Manila FAME, he curated exhibits to develop the craftsmanship of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Philippines.
This coming October, Soliven will once again work with local craftsmen in the ‘Materia:Bamboo’ exhibit to showcase the practical use and innate flexibility of bamboo materials.
Chilean designer Nelson Sepulveda takes part in DCP workshop at Manila FAME
Renowned Chilean designer and stylist Nelson Sepulveda (left) actively participates in a design workshop on palm frond weaving held recently at the lobby of the World Trade Center during the 63rd Manila FAME. Organized by the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), the workshop was led by young industrial designers on materials, who also organized workshops on handmade paper filigree making, paper lamp making, and lamination of raw materials. DCP also presented pop-up settings on paper lamps, architectural baskets, and the Philippine bamboo as well as a raw materials gallery featuring bamboo and coco coir. Sepulveda is currently in the country to develop product designs for Philippine handicrafts, as part of his commitment to stage a special setting in the forthcoming Manila FAME October 2016 show edition, in close coordination with international trend consulting company Edelkoort Etc.
The DA Pavilion at Manila FAME showcases gourmet gifts and health & wellness items
The Department of Agriculture – Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service (DA-AMAS) partnered with the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) in setting up the DA Pavilion in the 63rd edition of Manila FAME at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. DA-AMAS and CITEM organized the participation of the food as gifts as well as the body and wellness sectors in the trade show through a well-coordinated presentation of Gourmet Gifts and Health & Wellness items. The products featured in the pavilion were manufactured by select grassroot communities supported by DA-AMAS.

GIGA Natural Products Specialist Corporation, a manufacturer and retailer of natural products, recently participated in the 63rd Manila FAME as one of the select MSMEs in the DA Pavilion. Manila FAME visitors raved about the company’s all-natural set of personal care products such as tea tree oil soaps, shampoo bars, virgin coconut oil soaps, body sprays, scalp conditioners, massage oils, baby soaps, and dog shampoo bars. Yakan weaving products a hit at Manila FAME
Visitors to the 63rd Manila FAME flock to the booth of the Yakan Weavers Albarakkattu Multi-Purpose Cooperative, represented by member Angie Ilul (third from left). Featured in this One Town, One Product (OTOP) booth were a variety of Yakan products such as intricately woven table runners, place mats, shawls, slippers, espadrilles, purses, and travel kits. Ilul, a weaver-turned-entrepreneur, said that the cooperative’s participation in the Manila FAME April 2016 edition helped promote Yakan products in both the local and international markets, which would greatly benefit the Yakan weavers in Basilan. The Yakans are exquisitely known for the vibrancy of color in their cloth and their exceptional weaving techniques. The OTOP program of the Bureau of Domestic Trade Promotion (BDTP) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is a priority program of the government that aims to promote entrepreneurship and job creation in the country’s various regions.
Silya, Elektrika atbp. promotes sustainable design
A family-run business based in Nueva Vizcaya, Silya, Elektrika atbp. designs and handcrafts products made from reclaimed wood and other materials and turns them into one-of-a-kind conversational pieces. In the 63rd edition of Manila FAME, the company’s well-designed and unique creations – from stools and benches to torch lights and wall arts — were a sure hit among OTOP visitors. Silya, Elektrika atbp. provides a distinct form in each product design, plans to open a shop in Manila soon for environment-conscious shoppers who are into sustainable design. World-renowned Chilean designer Nelson Sepulveda to participate in Manila FAME October 2016 edition
Chilean designer, scenographer, and stylist Nelson Sepulveda presents his creative ideas on his would-be special setting in the October edition of Manila FAME during his recent visit in the 63rd edition of the trade show this April. He spoke about the importance of ‘romanticizing the handmade and abstracting everyday objects’ in doing design before a group of students, exhibitors, members of the press, and representatives of the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP) and the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM). For the October 2016 show edition, Sepulveda will collaborate closely with the international trend consulting company Edelkoort Etc. to develop designs for Philippine handcrafted baskets using natural materials, with the possibility of expanding the product lineup to include other everyday objects.
RIPPLES Plus highlights globally competitive SMEs at Manila FAME
The Regional Interactive Platform for Philippine Exporters (RIPPLES) Plus is a partnership program of the Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) with the Department of Trade and Industry-Regional Operations Development Group’s (DTI-RODG) Export Pathways Program (EPP). It enables the regional and provincial staff to handhold potential exporters through capacity-building trainings and provides direct interventions (e.g., product designs, market info seminars, compliance with market requirements, export marketing activities, and international trade fair participation) to potential and existing exporters enrolled under the EPP. The program aims to expand the supply base of globally competitive products and services as well as increase Philippine exports and international market shares. The Artisans Village tells the stories of crafts from the islands
Lifestyle designer PJ Arañador teams up with product specialists Imelda Datul and Rachel Dagñalan in a creative collaboration with the local governments, regional offices of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and 45 SMEs from Albay, Cagayan, Davao, and Laguna. The Artisans Village plays a significant role in protecting, preserving and promoting the arts and crafts of the islands. It aims to celebrate the work of local artisans and master craftsmen highly skilled in weaving, wood carving, metal forging, and other various forms of traditional crafts. The Artisans Village at the 63rd Manila FAME is open until April 24. It remains to be one of the favorite trade show highlights of Manila FAME trade buyers and guests alike.

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Convention Exhibits (CONEX) Organizing Committee presents a token of recognition for CITEM’s participation in CONEX 2016 at the Manila FAME Pavilion in SMX Convention Center. The Manila FAME Pavilion was a curated lounge which served as a promotional platform for the featured Philippine furniture and lighting manufacturers. The sophisticated presentation was well received by architect delegates, architecture practitioners, and the general public. Design Trails by Bambike at the Design Week Philippines
