Like a party of peacocks, nine emblematic chairs are poised to enthrall global buyers this October 20-22 at the World Trade Center in Manila FAME, the country’s premier design and lifestyle event. In collaboration with top Philippine SMEs, nine young and notable designers will recast the Peacock Chair (also called Philippine Chair) in uniquely modern versions, founded on the original design that captivated the world since its debut in the early 1900s.
Collaborating in this special showcase titled, ICON: Peacock Chair Redux, are Leo Sano for Locsin International, Mark Gerby Rivera for Country Accents, Inc., Jim Torres for Industria Home Vico Design and Manufacturing, Corporation, Tony Gonzales representing his own brand, A Greeting Card Co., Budji Layug for Kenneth Cobonpue, Jinggoy Buensuceso for Prizmic and Brill et Compagnie, Inc., Val Padilla for Luzon Rattan Industries, Leeroy New for MCCA Industrial Corporation, and Tes Pasola for Prado Filipino Artisans, Inc.
In a simple and organic design using steel frames and arorog weaves, internationally trained designer Leo Sano, in tandem with Locsin International, aim for the light, airy, and fluffed-up look, resembling the peacock’s feathers in its wide-open magnificent spread.
Country Accents, Inc., which collaborates with designer Mark Gerby Rivera, explores the essence of a peacock’s beauty and references on royalty. Using eyespots in resplendent hues of blue and yellow as highlights of a “birdcage-like” form, their design succeeds in combining the flexibility of rattan and firmness of steel and acorn wood.
Industria Home Vico Design & Manufacturing Corp. taps Jim Torres, a young Filipino designer for its Peacock chair entry in Manila FAME. Jim chooses metal to demonstrate the design values of the original Peacock Chair, including its intricate details, dramatic upper tail called coverts, and distinct hourglass base.
Designer and artist Tony Gonzales, who authored out of the box and globally acclaimed creations such as the Genie and the Melon chairs, is designing the peacock chair for A Greeting Card Company, a firm which Gonzales also heads. The company, which has been creating products out of handmade papers, is expected to produce a standout metal piece worthy of another global design award.
Kenneth Cobonpue, the self-titled company whose exceptional creativity and ingenuity has been recognized in various countries, including London, Italy and Germany and by renowned Hollywood celebrities, partners with designer Budji Layug to create its version of the iconic chair. With these two design bigwigs coming together to create a piece, nothing less than superlative is certain.
Prizmic and Brill et Compagnie, Inc., a company known for its signature style of juxtaposing the raw and traditional with choice modern materials such as select hardwood, hand tipped hides, brass, rattan, steel, glass and textile, very well complements the skills of visual artist and sculptor Jinggoy Buensuceso. Buensuceso, who made the 2,000-scale monumental modern dragon sculpture that wraps around the Green Sun Building in Makati City, is expected to produce a modern statement this October.
Luzon Rattan Industries picks veteran designer Val Padilla for its chair entry in Manila FAME, a challenging feat for the company that has been manufacturing and exporting original Peacock Chairs as well as other rattan furniture since the 1940s. Padilla, however, gamely accepts the opportunity to contemporize the once globally acclaimed design without losing its essential Filipino roots and taking advantage of the company’s deep weaving expertise.
Leeroy New, one of Lady Gaga’s costume designers in her music video, Marry The Night, designs for MCCA Industrial Corporation, an internationally renowned wrought-iron and glass-blowing company that produces indoor and outdoor furniture and decorative accessories. New, who has partnered with MCCA in the past, presents a stunning design of the peacock chair in all its bluish iridescence, achieving it through glass and metal.
The peacock chair has been described as “the fan chair, with its flared back and intricately woven details and throne-like, (its) head-framing seat reserved for royals.” More interestingly, the peacock chair carries its personal cachet, as narrated in “The Development and Effects of the Twentieth-Century Wicker Revival” by Emily A. Morris in her thesis for the Smithsonian Associates and Corcoran College of Art and Design in 2012. She stated that while few sources can track the accurate origins of the peacock chair, which she tagged “Manila” or “Philippine,” the American critics wove fantastical tales that involved Southeast Asian royalty and lush surroundings.

The Center for International Trade Expositions & Missions (CITEM) commissioned two of the country’s hottest young designers to create new collections for Home and Fashion using Philippine indigenous materials at the 60th Manila FAME slated October 16-19 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.
Olivia d’Aboville, the program’s Designer for Home, will show modern Home applications of the fabrics developed with the participating weaving communities. Amina Aranaz-Alunan, Designer for Fashion, will create collections of fashion wearables showing how indigenous textiles can both be trendy and functional.
The 2nd edition of NeoTextiles Philippines will feature six weaving communities coming from the Visayas and Mindanao regions – twice the number of textile manufacturer-participants as compared to its introductory launch last year. The Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) provided textile development support and consultancy to the participating designers as part of the textile development component of the program.
The featured Visayan textiles and manufacturers are: piña by Heritage Arts and Crafts of Aklan, Philippine silk by Negros Silk Manufacturers’ Association of Negros Occidental, hablon by Salngan Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Iloilo, and raffia textile by Tubigon Loomweavers Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Bohol. While the Mindanao textiles and manufacturers are: hinabol by the Higaunon Women Weavers of Bukidnon and t’nalak woven by the T’boli weavers of Klowil Multi-Purpose Cooperative in South Cotabato.
To showcase the versatility of the NeoTextiles, Olivia d’Aboville teams-up with CustomMade Crafts Center and Tinukib to produce Home items made of hinabol and hablon. Another participating company, That One Piece, collaborates with Olivia to create eye-catching lamps using the developed fabrics. While Amina Aranaz-Alunan will introduce the ARANAZ chic collections of Fashion wearables using the NeoTextiles.
Last year, CITEM, the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) export-marketing arm, launched its Material Development Program which gave birth to NeoTextiles Philippines as a textile-development and branding initiative for contemporary Philippines textiles.
Indigenous, design-savvy arts and crafts products will take the spotlight in the One Town, One Product (OTOP) Marketplace, one of the show features of the 59th Manila FAME slated at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex on March 14-17.
Organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Manila FAME is a global platform for the country’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which features certified, export-quality products such as furniture and furnishings, holiday gifts and décor, garments, and fashion accessories designed and crafted in the Philippines for the global market.
A project of the DTI-Bureau of Domestic Trade (DTI-BDT), OTOP Marketplace topbills the 25 “Rising Stars” of the regions, whose products are created by local communities, highlighting tradition, culture, and craftsmanship while emphasizing sustainability and generating livelihood. It showcases local arts and crafts products from select regions in the Philippines.
Last year’s OTOP Marketplace featured design-forward products made from locally sourced raw materials such as water hyacinth, bamboo, burnt wood, coconut, and tikog, among a variety of natural fibers. More promising products are in the offing in the 59th show edition of Manila FAME, which was curated by Manila FAME Creative Director Budji Layug.
Six young and emerging design talents from the Red Box program were tapped to work with the participating OTOP Marketplace companies to beef up their product development endeavors. They are Leah Sanchez, Vernice Songco, Marga Espiritu, Bong and Rossy Rojales, and Rachelle Dagñalan.
Manila FAME is the second longest-running trade show in the Asia Pacific, and is the only trade event in the country that has been approved by UFI (Union des Foires Internationales) or the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, the association of trade show organizers, fairground owners, national and international associations of the exhibition industry and its partners.

The Katha Awards, considered as the most prestigious award in the Philippine design scene, is a significant platform where Philippine product design innovation and excellence is recognized. Its goal is to give distinction to ingenious designs and encourage exporters to raise their design standards for Philippine export products as well as to pursue a skillful exploration of new materials/processes. Design Week Philippines is a multi-faceted platform that brings together creative visionaries from diverse backgrounds and disciplines in a series of programs and events that celebrate design and artistry.
“Since its inception in the early ‘80s, the Katha Awards has been distinguished as an important landmark of Philippine product design excellence and innovation. It is an emblem and statement that seeks to inspire and challenge exporters and designers to constantly create and develop original designs for furniture, houseware and furnishings, holiday décor and gifts, and fashion complements relevant in the global market,” said Rosvi Gaetos, Executive Director of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM).
The major categories of Katha Awards are Best Product Design (Furniture, Houseware/Furnishings, Holiday Décor and Gifts, and Fashion), Best Booth Display, and an Eco-Design Award as a special citation. The four major product categories are Furniture, Houseware/Furnishings, Holiday Décor and Gifts, and Fashion.
More than just recognizing design excellence and innovation, the Katha Awards also considers the development of earth-friendly products as a top priority. Its Eco-Design Award category puts focus on products developed through the use of sustainable materials and environmentally sound practices.

Manila FAME is the country’s premiere design and lifestyle event held every March and October.
Spearheaded by international fashion icon Josie Natori, Manila Wear is a bi-annual presentation of the country’s finest selection of summer-inspired fashion pieces that has been making waves in the international fashion scene since its debut in 2012.
For this edition of Manila Wear, Natori is collaborating with Manila FAME Creative Director Budji Layug in the interpretation of the “Urban Resort” design concept, which has been adapted by Manila Wear designers to create their own fashion collections. “Urban Resort” calls for lines and structures that are relaxed and defined by lush, vibrant colors, with dramatic textures and embellishments.
A series of exciting collaborations and exhibitions, featuring the Filipino’s mastery of indigenous materials and heritage handiwork, will be the added attraction of Manila Wear.
On exhibit will be unique fashion pieces that are contemporary fashion expressions of traditional design methods – all creations of leading fashion designers, namely, Amina Aranaz-Alunan, Carissa Cruz- Evangelista, Maco Custodio, Lally Dizon, Natalya Lagdameo, Adante Leyesa, Joyce Makitalo, Michelline Syjuco, Malou Romero, Ken Samudio, and Nicole Whisenhunt. They will again interpret Manila Wear with their own brand and sensibility.
Meanwhile, designers Tipay Caintic, Joel Escober, Twinkle Ferraren, Anne Marie Saguil, and Lulu Tan-Gan will display their intricately handcrafted apparels with their own take on Manila Wear. Filip+Inna’s Len Cabili, known for her masterful use of indigenous materials in modernist designs, will present her new collection.
Manila Wear designers are proving how fashion sense can be Filipino and global at the same time. Their fashion creations affirm that the Filipino fashion label has become globally competitive.

A developmental partnership between the Garments and Textile Industry Development Office (GTIDO) and the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), “Weaves of the Philippines” highlights the versatility, viability, and global competitiveness of Philippine craftsmanship through live demonstrations and eyecatching textile installations.
“It is with pride that we present these special installations that feature the country’s artistic tradition of weaving which dates back to the pre-Hispanic times. This tradition has earned its place not only in the country’s culture and history but also in the local fashion scene as well,” said CITEM Executive Director Rosvi Gaetos.
Live demonstrations of traditional weaving, juxtaposed with contemporary display installations, will give Manila FAME visitors an insight into the cultural narrative of the country’s weaving heritage. The country’s traditional weaves are given a contemporary spin in a unique collaboration among local designers, manufacturing companies, and the weaving communities.
The special installations will showcase the Piña of Aklan, Abel of Ilocos Sur, T’nalak of the T’boli, and tikog mat of Samar. Installation artist Patty Eustaquio, interior design duo Vernice Songco and Marga Espiritu, accessories designer Natalya Lagdameo, and interior designer Rossy Yabut-Rojales have collaborated with local manufacturers and weaving communities to give the country’s traditional weaves a contemporary spin.

A new set of designers will provide product development assistance to local manufacturers to create export-quality holiday products. Young designers Mansy Abesamis and Kath Mitra have collaborated with Budji Layug for the Red Box Holiday and Gifts program to help local manufacturers in showcasing their finely crafted holiday products to local and foreign buyers in a special setting.
The Red Box program aims to position the country as a go-to destination for design-savvy and innovative products made by talented Filipino craftsmen whose work are on a par with world standards. It also covers the following categories: Home, Fashion, and the One Town, One Product (OTOP), with each having its own scenography at Manila FAME, highlighting the potential of the Philippine export industry in the grassroots levels.
