Like a party of peacocks, nine emblematic chairs are poised to enthrall global buyers this October 20-22 at the World Trade Center in Manila FAME, the country’s premier design and lifestyle event. In collaboration with top Philippine SMEs, nine young and notable designers will recast the Peacock Chair (also called Philippine Chair) in uniquely modern versions, founded on the original design that captivated the world since its debut in the early 1900s.
Collaborating in this special showcase titled, ICON: Peacock Chair Redux, are Leo Sano for Locsin International, Mark Gerby Rivera for Country Accents, Inc., Jim Torres for Industria Home Vico Design and Manufacturing, Corporation, Tony Gonzales representing his own brand, A Greeting Card Co., Budji Layug for Kenneth Cobonpue, Jinggoy Buensuceso for Prizmic and Brill et Compagnie, Inc., Val Padilla for Luzon Rattan Industries, Leeroy New for MCCA Industrial Corporation, and Tes Pasola for Prado Filipino Artisans, Inc.
In a simple and organic design using steel frames and arorog weaves, internationally trained designer Leo Sano, in tandem with Locsin International, aim for the light, airy, and fluffed-up look, resembling the peacock’s feathers in its wide-open magnificent spread.
Country Accents, Inc., which collaborates with designer Mark Gerby Rivera, explores the essence of a peacock’s beauty and references on royalty. Using eyespots in resplendent hues of blue and yellow as highlights of a “birdcage-like” form, their design succeeds in combining the flexibility of rattan and firmness of steel and acorn wood.
Industria Home Vico Design & Manufacturing Corp. taps Jim Torres, a young Filipino designer for its Peacock chair entry in Manila FAME. Jim chooses metal to demonstrate the design values of the original Peacock Chair, including its intricate details, dramatic upper tail called coverts, and distinct hourglass base.
Designer and artist Tony Gonzales, who authored out of the box and globally acclaimed creations such as the Genie and the Melon chairs, is designing the peacock chair for A Greeting Card Company, a firm which Gonzales also heads. The company, which has been creating products out of handmade papers, is expected to produce a standout metal piece worthy of another global design award.
Kenneth Cobonpue, the self-titled company whose exceptional creativity and ingenuity has been recognized in various countries, including London, Italy and Germany and by renowned Hollywood celebrities, partners with designer Budji Layug to create its version of the iconic chair. With these two design bigwigs coming together to create a piece, nothing less than superlative is certain.
Prizmic and Brill et Compagnie, Inc., a company known for its signature style of juxtaposing the raw and traditional with choice modern materials such as select hardwood, hand tipped hides, brass, rattan, steel, glass and textile, very well complements the skills of visual artist and sculptor Jinggoy Buensuceso. Buensuceso, who made the 2,000-scale monumental modern dragon sculpture that wraps around the Green Sun Building in Makati City, is expected to produce a modern statement this October.
Luzon Rattan Industries picks veteran designer Val Padilla for its chair entry in Manila FAME, a challenging feat for the company that has been manufacturing and exporting original Peacock Chairs as well as other rattan furniture since the 1940s. Padilla, however, gamely accepts the opportunity to contemporize the once globally acclaimed design without losing its essential Filipino roots and taking advantage of the company’s deep weaving expertise.
Leeroy New, one of Lady Gaga’s costume designers in her music video, Marry The Night, designs for MCCA Industrial Corporation, an internationally renowned wrought-iron and glass-blowing company that produces indoor and outdoor furniture and decorative accessories. New, who has partnered with MCCA in the past, presents a stunning design of the peacock chair in all its bluish iridescence, achieving it through glass and metal.
The peacock chair has been described as “the fan chair, with its flared back and intricately woven details and throne-like, (its) head-framing seat reserved for royals.” More interestingly, the peacock chair carries its personal cachet, as narrated in “The Development and Effects of the Twentieth-Century Wicker Revival” by Emily A. Morris in her thesis for the Smithsonian Associates and Corcoran College of Art and Design in 2012. She stated that while few sources can track the accurate origins of the peacock chair, which she tagged “Manila” or “Philippine,” the American critics wove fantastical tales that involved Southeast Asian royalty and lush surroundings.
Come October Manila FAME, worldwide buyers will be treated to this one-of-a-kind metamorphosis and evolution at its ICON: PEACOCK CHAIR REDUX showcase.

RED BOX, a designer development program initiated by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), has now opened the second cycle of its search for the country’s next design talents. CITEM calls on Filipinos aged 21 to 30 years old who have not yet received major home- or fashion-related awards to bring their passion and talent for design to a higher level through the RED BOX program.
The RED BOX program is a platform to harness talents and nurture them to become the next generation of Philippine designers. From its first cycle, four young designers were awarded as grand winners, and represented the Philippines in select trade shows in London, Milan, and New York City.
“RED BOX started out as a show feature of Manila FAME in 2011. Designers featured back then were handpicked by CITEM to showcase their creations in the trade fair. Three years later, RED BOX has evolved into a designer development program,” CITEM Executive Director Rosvi C. Gaetos shares.
“The Philippines is full of talented young creatives. RED BOX opened its doors to them, so they can further develop their skills under the mentorship of Filipino design icons,” Gaetos adds.
The RED BOX design program is now open for applications to the second cycle of its search of Philippines’ next design talents.
In 2014, RED BOX introduced a shortlist of 14 design talents who were trained and guided by Budji Layug for furniture and home accents, and Lulu Tan-Gan for apparel and fashion accessories.
The design talents underwent an in-depth immersion in the local home and fashion industries, including seminars and workshops on design; exposure to craft techniques through regional factory visits; and development of product collections in close collaboration with manufacturers. Cycle 1 of the RED BOX program culminated with the designers’ collections showcased in Manila FAME October 2015, where a jury selected the grand winners based on a prescribed criteria.
Thian Rodriguez, who considers being named as RED BOX Cycle 1 grand winner for Fashion Apparel as the most memorable highlight in his career as a designer, is grateful to be part of the program. “The program helped me widen my perspective in arts and fashion. Red Box helped me find my own identity as a designer and build my own name in the industry,” he says.
Rodriguez cites the mentorship under Lulu Tan-Gan, and the exposure to fashion design principles, the industry, and the market as great learning experiences that developed his craft. Rodriguez is one of the four designers who represented the Philippines in the International Fashion Showcase (IFS) in London, United Kingdom in February this year.
Jim Torres, RED BOX Cycle 1 grand winner for Home, also attributes his growth as a designer to the industry exposure, shares that it is through the RED BOX program that he was able to discover his design identity by interacting with different people such as clients, manufacturers, and co-designers.
“You must know how to adapt—that’s why Red Box is a mentorship program. Being a designer is more than just designing and building things; it’s about being able to communicate and inspire through design,” Torres adds as an advice to aspiring, young designers. Torres’ Escapade collection, a lighting installation made of shredded stainless steel, was featured in the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York, USA in May 2016.
Cycle 2 of the program will also give aspiring talents the opportunity to participate in international trade fairs, workshops or short courses.
CITEM has partnered with the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), a technical agency of the DTI mandated to promote industrial design as a tool for improving the quality and competitiveness of Philippine products. The partnership between CITEM and DCP aims to sustain development of the next generation of Philippine designers.

The RED BOX Design Talents 2015 Fashion finalists try their hand at devoré, a fabric technique that uses chemicals to “burn” a semi-transparent pattern on a solidly woven fabric.
Manila FAME, the country’s premier design and lifestyle event, returns to its April season to bring the global trade buyers to the optimal buying cycle at the World Trade Center in Pasay City on April 21-24. For its 63rd show edition, the trade fair evolves into a boutique show featuring a more sophisticated, more exclusive and tightly curated show.
With the theme “Iridescence,” a portrayal of the colorful character of the design and lifestyle event of Asia, Manila FAME will headline an ever-growing showcase of export-quality Philippine designer pieces for the home, holiday, and fashion sectors in a well-coordinated boutique setting. It is organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
“Manila FAME is more than just a trade fair. It is a journey of discovery of globally responsive products that celebrate color and style under one roof. Buyers who visit Manila FAME on a regular basis always comment that they enjoy and benefit from the multi-dimensional experience that only Manila FAME offers,” said Rosvi Gaetos, the executive director of CITEM.
Spring Forward and Y’ARI are Manila FAME’s special highlights this April under CITEM’s Design for Exports program, a multi-tiered and multi-faceted assistance program which provides Philippine exporters, manufacturers, and designers with a full range of design and product development services. The program brings together both local and international designers and business experts, as well as both young and seasoned industry players to create finely crafted products in the home and fashion sectors designed for the global market.
Spring Forward will showcase handpicked local creations from the country’s craftsmen, artisans, and young designers. Furniture designer and interior design consultant Ito Kish will ‘reimagine’ the season of renewal through a symphony of greens and hanging light bulbs, brought together by solid black marble table tops that puts focus on the versatility and the potential of Philippine products.
Y’ARI will highlight the intersection of artisanal production in various Philippines villages and the interventions used to modernize this production, with Marian Roces as lead curator. The exhibition will showcase textiles, accessories, and ornaments crafted from native materials such as piña silk, beads, pearls, and gold to convey the level of quality that is being matched by modern transformations. With a haute design concept on hand, the exhibit will depart from typical trade show approaches.
Trade buyers and visitors will also get to experience the Philippines’ distinct character and rich inventory of traditions and talents through The Artisans Village, which aims to protect, preserve and promote the arts and crafts of the islands. It aims to celebrate the work of local artisans and master craftsmen highly skilled in weaving, wood carving, metal forging, and other various forms of traditional crafts.
As in previous Manila FAME show editions, Red Box will continue to inspire design enthusiasts with an inspirational showcase of fresh home and fashion ideas. Red Box is a design development that continues to develop junior designers through an ongoing talent and development and mentorship program. For the April 2016 edition, Red Box will feature the iconic designs of junior designers Joseph Rastrullo and Rachelle Dagñalan who will develop a conceptual display based on Manila FAME’s theme “Iridescence,” under the mentorship of Budji Layug, the creative director of Manila FAME.
The presence of OTOP (One Town, One Product) manufacturers will once again highlight handcrafted products made by skilled Filipino craftsmen from various local communities. It is a project of the DTI-Bureau of Domestic Trade Promotions (DTI-BDTP).
Manila FAME will coincide with the celebration of Design Week Philippines (DWP), which fosters connections between creative industry practitioners and design enthusiasts in an interactive sharing of knowledge, ideas, and trends.
Now on its 9th bi-annual staging, Design Week Philippines will provide “the richest, most exciting, most meaningful ways to group, gather, and bond people.” The theme for April 2016 is “Connection” which refers to the creative attempt to bring together people from diverse backgrounds and culture to interact and share their creativity with each other, with Intramuros as DWP’s first design district.
Manila FAME is the second-longest running trade show in the Asia Pacific. It is the only trade event in the country approved by the Union des Foires Internationales (UFI), or the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, a Paris-based association of trade fair organizers founded 90 years ago in Milan, Italy on 15 April 1925.

Culmination of a one-year design dev’t prog
From over 140 aspiring designers, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), introduces its 14 finalists in the Red Box Design Talents, a platform to discover and nurture young designers that aims to produce breakthrough Philippine design talents by 2017.
“To strengthen the Philippine’s reputation as ‘Asia’s Design Destination,’ we should continue nurturing and inspiring young designers to make great strides in showcasing their design ingenuity,” said Rosvi Gaetos, executive director of CITEM.
Under the mentorship of celebrated design icons Budji Layug and Lulu Tan-Gan, the 14 finalists were immersed in a unique design and development process involving in-depth industry exposure and close collaboration with manufacturers. The result is a renewed understanding and intimate knowledge of the process of design, material and craft techniques.
The Furniture and Home Accents finalists of Red Box learned the art of woodworking from Pampanga’s Betis Crafts Inc./ JB Woodcraft, Triboa Bay Living and South Sea Veneer. Ms. Leslie Bituin-Mendiola, owner of Betis Crafts, Inc., stressed the importance of knowing the target market in the design process, while Mr. Randy Viray, owner of Triboa Bay Living, explained the significance of discovering one’s identity as a designer, urging the talents to “live and breathe design.” At South Sea Veneer, they witnessed and learned about veneer cutting and application. The finalists also strengthens their metalwork skills at Venzon Lighting Manufacturing, Industria, and Prizmic & Brill.
“An artist creates for himself. A designer creates for another entity,” explains Mr. Jude Tiotuico of Industria of the difference between an artist and a designer. Mr. Matthew Brill of Prizmic & Brill emphasizes the importance of understanding the material and the designers to understand the production costs when collaborating with exporter-manufacturers.
The Furniture and Home Accents finalists acquired exposure to materials in Cebu from Bon Ace, Obra Cebuana, and Nature’s Legacy, and gained deeper understanding of the design process from Vito Selma, Kenneth Cobonpue, and Cebu Fil Veneer.
In Bohol, the finalists discovered how technology such as 3D printing can aid their prototyping process through the assistance of FabLab Bohol Team, composed of representatives from the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) -Bohol, local designers, and volunteers from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Josie Natori, internationally acclaimed Filipino designer and CEO and founder of The Natori Company, opened her doors to the Fashion finalists for an opportunity to learn about the production of high-end fashion garments, allowing them a tour on a large garments production house to witness the intensive labor and the different stages of manufacturing process.
To broaden their perspective on tradition, a recurring theme in design, and its inspiring adaptation into contemporary works, the Fashion finalists proceeded to the Metropolitan Museum of Manila to witness a prestigious showcase of indigenous and contemporary designs of French and other international artists at the International Festival of Extra Ordinary Textiles (FITE).
The Fashion finalists learned Discharge Printing and Wrinkled Pleating in a two-day workshop on Fabric Treatments and Manipulation, under Lulu Tan-Gan and Ms. Vie Alvarez, a textile expert and instructor under the Fashion Design and Merchandising (FDM) Program at the College of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. They also attended a Trends Briefing and Workshop on Decorative Finishing for Fashion Accessories, led by Design Center of the Philippines Design Division Head Luis Manalang and Resource Person Marilyn Munio.
The Fashion designers learned the handmade footwear production from Ai-She Footwear. This involves processing of raw materials, pattern-making, cutting, and stitching; shaping and lasting; and finishing and packing. The finalists also participated in the bakya making of RTC Woodcraft.
Apart from the workshops, The Red Box Design Talents attended seminars on Elevating Filipino Artistry in Modern Fashion by JC Buendia, Integrating Filipino Aesthetics in Contemporary Design by Felipe De Leon, Jr., and Reinventing Filipino Craftsmanship by Rita Nazareno.
“A most striking quality of Philippine ethnicity or traditional cultures is their great creative diversity and richness,” De Leon stressed during his talk.
The pioneer batch of Red Box Design Talents will exhibit their collections developed in collaboration with local manufacturers at the October 2015 edition of Manila FAME slated October 15-18 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City. The showcase is a culmination of a year-long design journey. At the same time, it is a glimpse into a work in progress. A panel of distinguished industry experts and stakeholders will determine the winning designers from each category.
The finalists under the Furniture and Home Accents sectors are Viktoria Laguyo, Mariel Lazo, Edward Sibunga, Kristel Blancas, Diana Ramirez, and Jim Torres.
For the Fashion Apparel and Fashion Accessories categories, the finalists are Leby Le Morìa, Thian Rodriguez, JM Rosario, Vince Tolentino, Jeffrey Manahan, Jelvin Mujar, Micki Olaguer, and Michille Sabulao.
Organized by CITEM, the export promotions arm of DTI, Manila FAME features finely selected furniture and home furnishings, holiday gifts and décor, and fashion accessories designed and crafted in the Philippines for the global market. It continues to inspire with a strong statement on what is design-forward, popular, artisanal, and soulful.
Manila FAME proves once again that it is the country’s premiere design and lifestyle event as it showcased a host of finely crafted home, fashion, and holiday products that could attest that the Philippines is indeed an ideal sourcing destination in Asia for design-driven products.
As the signature event of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), Manila FAME drew a number of local and foreign buyers who happily sourced for designer products in the four-day trade show held recently at the SMX Convention Center.
“We do not just follow trends; we set them. Manila FAME continues to inspire with a strong design statement on what is design-forward, popular, artisanal, and soulful. It’s a design experience like no other,” said Rosvi Gaetos, executive director of CITEM.
In each show edition of Manila FAME, hundreds of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the home, holiday décor, and fashion industries are continually given a platform to promote their export-quality products to the world market.
For its 60th edition this October, Manila FAME featured products that were crafted according to the ‘design stories’ of Soulcrafts (heritage crafts), Luxe (luxury items) and Gen C (Millennial products), as it aimed to cater to the needs and interests of all audiences.
Event highlights were the Design Philippines Scenography, ‘Be Our Guest’: A Table Accessories Showcase, Manila Wear, NeoTextiles Philippines, Red Box, OTOP Marketplace,and the International Hall.
Under the creative direction of Budji Layug, the Design Philippines Scenography featured the latest designs from a collection crafted by designers and exhibitors of the Design for Exports program, as well as, choice pieces from brands under Design Philippines and Manila Wear. Designers Eric Paras and Stanley Ruiz collaborated with Layug in designing the Design Philippines installation, which featured a giant salakab made of bamboo to set the tone for the special setting made of select design-forward pieces from a gathering of the country’s brightest creative talents.
A tabletops setting titled “Be Our Guest” highlighted an eye-catching, ready-to-buy collection of table accessories developed under the Design for Exports Program by German master florist and designer Detlef Klatt, in collaboration with 17 manufacturers who are experts in working with materials such as abaca (a plant fiber), ceramic, wood, metal, capiz, mother of pearl, and other natural materials. On three 13-meter-long tables, over 800 table pieces such as baskets and bowls, trays and centerpieces, and tablecloths and placemats were laid out in an extraordinary presentation – a play of patterns, textures, and shapes that masterfully blended the table, products, and surrounding elements to create still-life compositions, as inspired by the street scenes of Berlin, New York, Tokyo, and Manila.
Fashionistas had a visual sampling of unique fashion pieces that combined artisanal crafts with contemporary sensibilities in Manila Wear, which featured a fresh collection in pursuit of personal style. International fashion icon Josie Natori curated the presentation and teamed up with fashion designers Cesar Gaupo, Lulu Tan-Gan, and JC Buendia.
NeoTextiles Philippines promoted the country’s indigenous fibers and textiles in support of local weaving communities. Designers Amina Aranaz-Alunan and Olivia d’Aboville provided new design directions to the participating textile manufacturers that created contemporary and versatile textiles and products for home and fashion.
Red Box Home Scenography presented the works of young designers Rachelle Dagñalan, Lilianna Manahan, Leeroy New, and Joseph Rastrullo who were matched with local manufacturers to create innovative products with a unique design sensibility. Red Box is a design development program of CITEM which aims to create the next generation of Philippine design talents.
The One Town, One Product (OTOP), a priority program of the Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT), showcased handcrafted pieces by skilled Filipino craftsmen whose skills have been passed on through generations of artisans. OTOP manufacturers teamed up with senior designers Viña Domingo-Roy and Rey Soliven, who both mentored Dagñalan and Rastrullo, to produce the latest collection from the regions.
Foreign exhibitors of home and fashion from Asia and the Pacific presented their export-quality products such as furniture, home décor, garments, fashion accessories, and scents in the International Hall. Participating countries were Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Taiwan.
Manila FAME is one of the longest-running trade shows in the Asia Pacific, and is the only trade event in the country approved by the Union des Foires Internationales (UFI), the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry. The 61st show edition will be held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on March 13-16, 2015.
