Manila FAME, the country’s premier lifestyle and design event, closed its first day with the exciting announcement of the KATHA October 2017 winners at the World Trade Center Metro Manila, Pasay City.
Since its inception in 1990, the Katha Awards has stood as the hallmark of Philippine product design excellence and innovation. The special distinction is awarded to Manila FAME companies and designers whose products embodied the innovative design and material manipulation.
Here are the winners of the KATHA October 2017:
1. Designer Wataru Sakuma’s MasaEco Development Inc. brought home the Katha for best booth design
2. The Antipolo-based company Schema won the KATHA for Best Product Design (Furniture) for its Lilou Lounge Chair.
3. Industria’s metal Reef Panel won the Katha for Best Product Design (Home Décor).
4. The unique Carabao Horn Glasses of Elm’s Accessoria De Casa was named Best Product Design (Fashion).
This year’s judges included School of Fashion and the Arts Design Institute Dean Tobias Guggenheimer, Sohu Designs Chief Creative Officer Jennifer So Hu, fashion designer Jojie Lloren, Print & Magazine Vice President Suki Salvador, Heima Creative Director Rossy Yabut-Rojales, Gallego Architects owner Eduardo Gallego, and Design Center of the Philippines Executive Director Maria Rita Matute.
Like a party of peacocks, nine emblematic chairs are poised to enthrall global buyers this October 20-22 at the World Trade Center in Manila FAME, the country’s premier design and lifestyle event. In collaboration with top Philippine SMEs, nine young and notable designers will recast the Peacock Chair (also called Philippine Chair) in uniquely modern versions, founded on the original design that captivated the world since its debut in the early 1900s.
Collaborating in this special showcase titled, ICON: Peacock Chair Redux, are Leo Sano for Locsin International, Mark Gerby Rivera for Country Accents, Inc., Jim Torres for Industria Home Vico Design and Manufacturing, Corporation, Tony Gonzales representing his own brand, A Greeting Card Co., Budji Layug for Kenneth Cobonpue, Jinggoy Buensuceso for Prizmic and Brill et Compagnie, Inc., Val Padilla for Luzon Rattan Industries, Leeroy New for MCCA Industrial Corporation, and Tes Pasola for Prado Filipino Artisans, Inc.
In a simple and organic design using steel frames and arorog weaves, internationally trained designer Leo Sano, in tandem with Locsin International, aim for the light, airy, and fluffed-up look, resembling the peacock’s feathers in its wide-open magnificent spread.
Country Accents, Inc., which collaborates with designer Mark Gerby Rivera, explores the essence of a peacock’s beauty and references on royalty. Using eyespots in resplendent hues of blue and yellow as highlights of a “birdcage-like” form, their design succeeds in combining the flexibility of rattan and firmness of steel and acorn wood.
Industria Home Vico Design & Manufacturing Corp. taps Jim Torres, a young Filipino designer for its Peacock chair entry in Manila FAME. Jim chooses metal to demonstrate the design values of the original Peacock Chair, including its intricate details, dramatic upper tail called coverts, and distinct hourglass base.
Designer and artist Tony Gonzales, who authored out of the box and globally acclaimed creations such as the Genie and the Melon chairs, is designing the peacock chair for A Greeting Card Company, a firm which Gonzales also heads. The company, which has been creating products out of handmade papers, is expected to produce a standout metal piece worthy of another global design award.
Kenneth Cobonpue, the self-titled company whose exceptional creativity and ingenuity has been recognized in various countries, including London, Italy and Germany and by renowned Hollywood celebrities, partners with designer Budji Layug to create its version of the iconic chair. With these two design bigwigs coming together to create a piece, nothing less than superlative is certain.
Prizmic and Brill et Compagnie, Inc., a company known for its signature style of juxtaposing the raw and traditional with choice modern materials such as select hardwood, hand tipped hides, brass, rattan, steel, glass and textile, very well complements the skills of visual artist and sculptor Jinggoy Buensuceso. Buensuceso, who made the 2,000-scale monumental modern dragon sculpture that wraps around the Green Sun Building in Makati City, is expected to produce a modern statement this October.
Luzon Rattan Industries picks veteran designer Val Padilla for its chair entry in Manila FAME, a challenging feat for the company that has been manufacturing and exporting original Peacock Chairs as well as other rattan furniture since the 1940s. Padilla, however, gamely accepts the opportunity to contemporize the once globally acclaimed design without losing its essential Filipino roots and taking advantage of the company’s deep weaving expertise.
Leeroy New, one of Lady Gaga’s costume designers in her music video, Marry The Night, designs for MCCA Industrial Corporation, an internationally renowned wrought-iron and glass-blowing company that produces indoor and outdoor furniture and decorative accessories. New, who has partnered with MCCA in the past, presents a stunning design of the peacock chair in all its bluish iridescence, achieving it through glass and metal.
The peacock chair has been described as “the fan chair, with its flared back and intricately woven details and throne-like, (its) head-framing seat reserved for royals.” More interestingly, the peacock chair carries its personal cachet, as narrated in “The Development and Effects of the Twentieth-Century Wicker Revival” by Emily A. Morris in her thesis for the Smithsonian Associates and Corcoran College of Art and Design in 2012. She stated that while few sources can track the accurate origins of the peacock chair, which she tagged “Manila” or “Philippine,” the American critics wove fantastical tales that involved Southeast Asian royalty and lush surroundings.

Giving life to the three stories of Soulcrafts, Luxe and Gen C underlining the recently concluded 60th edition of Manila FAME was the Design Philippines Scenography, designed under the creative direction of Budji Layug.
The showcase featured the latest designs from a collection crafted by designers Stanley Ruiz and Eric Paras with special participation of select brands of Design Philippines and Manila Wear with strong potential to become the next wave of design-driven companies.
The Center for International Trade Expositions & Missions (CITEM) teamed up with these two notable senior designers, Eric Paras handled the Home Accents collection and Stanley Ruiz for the Furniture collections of Design Philippines. With Luxe, Gen C and Soulcraft as its cohesive storyline, these merchandise stories gave direction and consistency and provided the companies the rare opportunity to position themselves in the market.
“Brand stories will be the future especially for an industry that is having a slump and is unceasingly affected by commercialism. I strongly believe that the Filipino export companies, specifically in the furniture and furnishing industry, have the competitive edge in the global market. We are well known with our ingenuity and adaptability to global culture and designs,” said Paras.
“These local companies are distinct in terms of capabilities, and we should capitalize on that,” Ruiz added.
Both designers worked relentlessly with 21 companies to highlight its respective strength and expertise in the production scenario and doubly ensure that it is properly translated into visual merchandising. The opening day of the 60th Manila FAME concluded with the Katha Awards Ceremony at the Welcome Reception at HallONE: Design for Exports, the year round showcase of the Center of International Trade Expositions and Missions, located at the International Trade Center Complex, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City.
The Katha Awards is a hallmark of Philippine design excellence through the recognition of product design and innovation that combine the ideals of form and function. It is a prestigious award given to exhibitors at Asia’s premier design & lifestyle event, encouraging exporters to raise their design standards for Philippine export products and to pursue a skillful exploration of new materials and techniques.
Hosted by Issa Litton , TV and events host , the night was opened with opening remarks from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Ponciano C. Manalo Jr. Next up, came a speech from Gregory Domingo, Secretary of DTI.

Winning Best Product Design for Furniture was ITO KISH’s B-Luxe Chair by Ito Kish. As for Best Product Design for Home Décor, Industria took the award for its Flutty Candy Light by Jude Tiotuico. Paper Capers won the Best Product Design for Holiday Décor and Gifts for their Paper Finials by designers Arlene Gaddi-Maceda and Arthur Gaddi. Tixxi Handbags Mfg.’s Calli Ideal Design by Tessa Nepomuceno won the Katha Award for Best Product Design for Fashion. Schema won the award for Best Booth Display. MASAECO’s crystal clock by Wataru Sakuma, the same designer who designed the Katha Awards trophies, won the Eco-Design Award.

Design Philippines successfully established its presence at the recently concluded Euroluce at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2013. The participation was the first ever for the Philippines with top designers Antonio “Budji” Layug and Kenneth Cobonpue leading the contigency of six companies that included Cobonpue’s HIVE, Industria, Mayumi by CSM Philippines, Schema by Kalikasan Crafts, Tadeco Home by Tadeco Inc., and Triboa Bay Living by Vivere Lifestyles Co.
The participation showcased the best of the Philippines creative industry, presenting sustainable design sensibilities through the use of indigenous materials. Top-of-the-line lighting concepts featured were a merge of the traditional and the modern, paying due deference to the craftsmanship roots of Philippine design and highlighting the continuous evolution of the Art of the Craftsman to a more global movement that ultimately culminates into Design Philippines.
The success of Design Philippines at Euroluce can be spelled in the great number of buyer response by way of generated sales during the course of the five-day event. Buyers from Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Australia crowded the Philippine booth, a tell-tale sign that Design Philippines is doing its job in reaching more buyers in a bigger, global scale. Among the key buyers who were keen on Philippine-crafted products were top companies of Forestier and Roche Bobois (France), Pamalux (Austria), Alessi (Italy), Leone Design (Australia), Philips (The Netherlands), and Zaneen and Julien Armand (Canada).
As far as media interest goes, the Philippines participation was a success with Design Philippines generating quite the positive buzz and catching the interests of publications such as Interni and Marie Claire Maison. The participation also paved a partnership with the Italian Architects Association agreeing to present an Italian design showcase in Manila FAME’s March 2014 show next year.
With the momentum from Euroluce 2013, plans of bring Design Philippines to Maison et Objet, Europe’s largest design exhibition, are being set in motion, so expect to see more of Philippine design and craftsmanship making connections in the European market.
