Nina Santamaria, interior designer and principal of the Grupo Santamaria design firm, is joining Manila FAME for the first time this April as a product specialist of the holiday décor and fashion sectors for the event’s boutique edition.
Currently, Nina is exploring organic forms and textures, metallic colors, and holiday hues to develop fresh and unique product designs for several manufacturers from different parts of the country, such as Quezon City, Laguna, Davao, and Pampanga.
Nina is also collaborating with Philippine designers Ito Kish and Stanley Ruiz for Manila FAME April 2016’s Spring Forward special setting, which will feature the three designers’ creations and some of the finest seasonal indoor and outdoor products of certain Philippine manufacturers. With the creative genius of these three designers, trade buyers and visitors can expect product collections that are classic and traditional yet with a dramatic twist—fresher designs, shades, colors, and materials.
As a product specialist for holiday décor and fashion sectors come Manila FAME April 2016 show, Nina feels pressured but at the same time thrilled about her assignment. “It’s very challenging yet also very exciting because I get the chance to work right there at the heart of where the action is—in the factories where the ideas are being developed and the materials are being explored, tried, and tested. Even if the work is a little behind-the-scene, I feel that it is such an important responsibility,” she said.
Nina’s early years played a big part in her career as an interior designer. At the age of seven, she was acquainted with art through learning from Philippine National Artist Jose T. Joya. As a small child, Nina also enjoyed playing with building blocks, playing house, working on coloring books, and reading her mother’s Better Homes and Gardens magazine collections. She was naturally curious about beautiful places and spaces as well. Growing up with these influences, she chose a career in interior design. In 1999, she started designing after getting her license as an interior designer, and after a few years, she founded her own design firm, the Grupo Santamaria. The company has been operating for 10 years now, providing interior design for commercial, residential, institutional, and offices spaces, as well as events. Nina’s experience in designing various retail spaces—from bag and shoe retail stores to cafés and art galleries—helps her create designs for Manila FAME exhibitors.
To Nina, travel has always been a source of inspiration when coming up with designs. The places she visits open her eyes to different materials, cultures, and ways of life. “Travel is important; research is important. Even if you don’t travel physically, it’s good to travel through reading or surfing the internet, or just talking to people—getting to know their experiences. These things make up the fabric of how you approach holiday design,” she said. Nina is also inspired by the works of craftsmen and other designers in architecture and interior design.
Nina already knew about Manila FAME even before she was asked to become a product specialist for the trade show. In fact, she is a regular Manila FAME visitor who goes with her staff every year to look into the new collections of designers, both experienced and new. “[I love] the creative buzz of all the exhibitors and also the interest of the Filipinos—the growing interest of the Filipinos in attending and supporting these exhibitions. It’s great to see students lining up at Manila FAME; it’s great to see visitors from all walks of life: senior citizens, students, mommies, housewives. It’s not just limited to interior designers or architects or buyers,” she said.
Nina also offers some valuable pieces of advice to those who want to become designers as well. “Humility is always a good advice to other people, especially those who are starting out, because you can’t really buy or speed up expertise, experience, or knowledge in mastery of your craft. Whether you’re a furniture designer or a bag designer or a shoe designer or lighting designer, you have to keep on learning and you have to acknowledge that there are years of experience ahead that you have to go through in order for you to really master your craft. But with perseverance, you can really excel. And you have to be open to the criticism of others, but also stay true to your mission. And if you do that, you will come out as unique and strong. And remember always that you’re also representing your country and you’re doing a service to your country because it is an international exhibition. With all of that in mind, you will really feel humble and yet you’re one fish in a big sea of designers,” she said.

Out of the 400 exhibitors that showcase their products at the 62nd Manila FAME Design & Lifestyle Event, six (6) companies were chosen for their innovative and design-forward products by a panel of respected designers and artists.
The Loopy Chair by Industria Edition was named the Best Product Design for Furniture. Industria, a company based in Pampanga, specializes in the manipulation of steel into visually stunning furniture. The Twist, which won the Best Design for Home Décor, is a playful home piece crafted from wood by veteran furniture maker Vito Selma. Alchemista, Inc. won the Best Product Design Fashion for its Roma Collection of Ring Stands designed by Georgina Teng.
Crafted by Marmol Stone Work and designed by Janina Firmalo-Herrera, the Marble Tray was chosen as Best Product Design for Holiday Décor and Gifts. P&B Valises et Compagnie, Inc. took the Best Booth Display citation, while MASAECO was given the Special Citation for Best Eco-Design for its Gold Paper Bowls designed by Jinggoy Buensuceso.

Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure
With 33 years as Asia’s barometer for the global home, fashion and craft trade, Manila FAME, The Design and Lifestyle Event, opens this 15-18 October 2015 with a breathtaking collection from German designer Detlef Klatt that celebrates the good life as interpreted through the expert hands of 21 Philippine exporters in collaboration with the country’s most talented artisans and craftsmen. The entire collection will be curated and presented in Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure, a special event feature located at the ground floor of the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.
Inspired by the ethos of “gusto” which translates into hearty or keen enjoyment, Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure is an exuberant collection of dinnerware, home accents, and holiday décor, complemented by select artisanal food products. The collection promises a neo-baroque experience in living with its decorative embellishments and luxurious attention to details. It is a bold expression of a life well-lived as translated in a setting in black and white, and infused with touches of gold.
The Manila Gusto Gallery is a combined concept store and coffee shop. It speaks of harmony and significant connections despite differences. It encourages consumers to create a symphony of synergies among contrasting elements. The bar serves as a venue to mingle and share heart-to-heart conversations with friends over a cup of coffee; the gallery presents functional and decorative items that embody all things that make life more pleasurable; and the concept store encourages consumers to take home pieces that reflect their heart’s desires, and remind them of the grandeur of life and its decadences.
Product designs, especially developed by Detlef Klatt for the companies participating in the special setting, vary in style to highlight each company’s capability and strength. The products may diverge into extreme, mellow, sophisticated, natural among others, depending on the resources and identity of the company-participant. Despite the different product categories, the classical elements in the setting bind them for cohesion, according to Klatt.
Klatt also speaks of the longevity and high appraisal for products sporting a classical theme. “Products with classical looks are seen as timeless, and people appreciate them as high-value,” Klatt explains. He also notes that there is a big demand for these products, but there is an inadequacy in quality suppliers worldwide. Klatt sees this as an opportunity for the Philippine export industry.
Klatt also remarks that a classical theme will be easily understood by Filipino craftsmen because of the Spanish influence embedded in the Philippine culture. “It is normal to Filipinos because you see it your churches, in the curves and carved details in your furniture,” he says.

HYBRID, an art and design group composed of Jinggoy Buensuceso, Wataru Sakuma, and Stanley Ruiz collaborate on an installation that fuses light and time to form an enchanting 3D imprint mid-air that mimics the colors of the Aurora Borealis. This installation is made in celebration of United Nations’ proclamation of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies to bring to life Filipino creativity and imagination through a unique interpretation of light.

The One Town, One Product (OTOP) program features select small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that make use of the country’s indigenous raw materials and local skills and talents. Upholding the global competitiveness of Philippine products, the OTOP program of the Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT) of the DTI is a priority project of the government to promote entrepreneurship and job creation in the country’s various regions.
NeoTextiles Philippines continues with a vibrant showcase of textiles that marries the age-old weaving tradition of ethnic communities with modern and innovative 21st century techniques.
Red Box is a designer development program which aims to nurture the next generation of Philippine designers. Red Box works with emerging talents by matching them with local manufacturers to create fresh concepts that reflect their unique design sensibilities.
Red Box Design Talents is a platform to discover and nurture young designers. 14 finalists handpicked from over 140 aspirants by a high-caliber jury of design professionals under the mentorship of celebrated design icons Budji Layug and Lulu Tan-Gan were thoroughly immersed in a unique design and development process and close collaboration with manufacturers. The result is a renewed understanding and intimate knowledge of the process of design, material and craft techniques.
Designers Lilianna Manahan, Joseph Rastrullo, and Rachelle Dagñalan, who have been part of the Red Box Program since 2013 and are continuing their design journey as the country’s next generation of designers.
For the October 2015 edition, the three designers are given the freedom to create and curate individual spaces reflective of their design aesthetic. The showcase provides a glimpse into their growth as designers, individually and collectively.
International Exhibitors Pavilions
The International Hall houses companies from India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, and Taiwan carrying fashion items, furniture and furnishings, home décor, gifts, and premiums. Taiwan will introduce 60 brands under its Taiwan Excellence brand. These participating countries recognize the huge potential of the Philippine consumer market and are ready to tap the vast opportunities offered by the country’s growing affluence.
Parallel Event: Design Week Philippines
Design Week Philippines is a multi-faceted platform that brings together creative visionaries from diverse backgrounds and disciplines in a series of programs and events that celebrate design and artistry. It has its roots from Proclamation No. 277 signed by President Benigno S. Aquino III on October 20, 2011, where he declares the third week of March and October of each year as Design Week Philippines. It has thus become a national agenda that nurtures the creativity and design capability of the Philippines to spur innovations directed towards ushering in of trade opportunities, and positioning the Philippines as Asia’s design destination.
Design Week Philippines has three components—Design Talks, Design Tours, and Creative Environment—that will be held inside and outside of the SMX Convention Center in the duration of the event.
Design Talks, the key thought platform on design and creativity, masters and industry movers from various creative industries will flesh out the key values of the maker culture in a three-module forum to provide insight towards the co-creation of a better future.
Design Tours journeys north of Manila to highlight Pampanga as more than just the culinary capital of the country. It will take Manila FAME VIBs (very important buyers) and special guests to Pampanga to witness age old living traditions.
Starting this edition, Design Week Philippines will be rolled-out to key cities in the Metro through Creative Environment to reach an even broader audience and bring together a diverse group of design enthusiasts that encourages dynamic meet-ups and exciting encounters with members of the creative class.
For the Creative Environment component, The Design Week Philippines partners with Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) and SMX Aura for the celebration of Filipino Talent in the field of animation as they hold Animahenasyon 2015: 9th Philippine Animation Festival on 15-16 October 2015.

Harrison Compound tenants The Henry Hotel, Atelier of Mr. Jojie Lloren, Artelano 11 and Avellana Art Gallery likewise opens their space exclusively for select Manila FAME guests and buyers on 16 October 2015 for “Conversations at 2680 F.B. Harrison Compound,” a curated event where design, art, architecture and fashion intersect.
The Asia Cosplay Meet Philippines, organized by the Norman Goss Training Services in cooperation with Asia Cosplay Meet main organizer Singapore Cosplay Club and in partnership with Intramuros Administration, is set to select a three-person cosplay team that will represent the country in the upcoming Asia Cosplay Meet 2015.

As the signature event of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), Manila FAME drew a number of local and foreign buyers who happily sourced for designer products in the four-day trade show held recently at the SMX Convention Center.
“We do not just follow trends; we set them. Manila FAME continues to inspire with a strong design statement on what is design-forward, popular, artisanal, and soulful. It’s a design experience like no other,” said Rosvi Gaetos, executive director of CITEM.
In each show edition of Manila FAME, hundreds of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the home, holiday décor, and fashion industries are continually given a platform to promote their export-quality products to the world market.
For its 60th edition this October, Manila FAME featured products that were crafted according to the ‘design stories’ of Soulcrafts (heritage crafts), Luxe (luxury items) and Gen C (Millennial products), as it aimed to cater to the needs and interests of all audiences.
Event highlights were the Design Philippines Scenography, ‘Be Our Guest’: A Table Accessories Showcase, Manila Wear, NeoTextiles Philippines, Red Box, OTOP Marketplace,and the International Hall.
Under the creative direction of Budji Layug, the Design Philippines Scenography featured the latest designs from a collection crafted by designers and exhibitors of the Design for Exports program, as well as, choice pieces from brands under Design Philippines and Manila Wear. Designers Eric Paras and Stanley Ruiz collaborated with Layug in designing the Design Philippines installation, which featured a giant salakab made of bamboo to set the tone for the special setting made of select design-forward pieces from a gathering of the country’s brightest creative talents.
A tabletops setting titled “Be Our Guest” highlighted an eye-catching, ready-to-buy collection of table accessories developed under the Design for Exports Program by German master florist and designer Detlef Klatt, in collaboration with 17 manufacturers who are experts in working with materials such as abaca (a plant fiber), ceramic, wood, metal, capiz, mother of pearl, and other natural materials. On three 13-meter-long tables, over 800 table pieces such as baskets and bowls, trays and centerpieces, and tablecloths and placemats were laid out in an extraordinary presentation – a play of patterns, textures, and shapes that masterfully blended the table, products, and surrounding elements to create still-life compositions, as inspired by the street scenes of Berlin, New York, Tokyo, and Manila.
Fashionistas had a visual sampling of unique fashion pieces that combined artisanal crafts with contemporary sensibilities in Manila Wear, which featured a fresh collection in pursuit of personal style. International fashion icon Josie Natori curated the presentation and teamed up with fashion designers Cesar Gaupo, Lulu Tan-Gan, and JC Buendia.
NeoTextiles Philippines promoted the country’s indigenous fibers and textiles in support of local weaving communities. Designers Amina Aranaz-Alunan and Olivia d’Aboville provided new design directions to the participating textile manufacturers that created contemporary and versatile textiles and products for home and fashion.
Red Box Home Scenography presented the works of young designers Rachelle Dagñalan, Lilianna Manahan, Leeroy New, and Joseph Rastrullo who were matched with local manufacturers to create innovative products with a unique design sensibility. Red Box is a design development program of CITEM which aims to create the next generation of Philippine design talents.
The One Town, One Product (OTOP), a priority program of the Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT), showcased handcrafted pieces by skilled Filipino craftsmen whose skills have been passed on through generations of artisans. OTOP manufacturers teamed up with senior designers Viña Domingo-Roy and Rey Soliven, who both mentored Dagñalan and Rastrullo, to produce the latest collection from the regions.
Foreign exhibitors of home and fashion from Asia and the Pacific presented their export-quality products such as furniture, home décor, garments, fashion accessories, and scents in the International Hall. Participating countries were Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Taiwan.
Manila FAME is one of the longest-running trade shows in the Asia Pacific, and is the only trade event in the country approved by the Union des Foires Internationales (UFI), the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry. The 61st show edition will be held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on March 13-16, 2015.
