Out of the 400 exhibitors that showcase their products at the 62nd Manila FAME Design & Lifestyle Event, six (6) companies were chosen for their innovative and design-forward products by a panel of respected designers and artists.
The Loopy Chair by Industria Edition was named the Best Product Design for Furniture. Industria, a company based in Pampanga, specializes in the manipulation of steel into visually stunning furniture. The Twist, which won the Best Design for Home Décor, is a playful home piece crafted from wood by veteran furniture maker Vito Selma. Alchemista, Inc. won the Best Product Design Fashion for its Roma Collection of Ring Stands designed by Georgina Teng.
Crafted by Marmol Stone Work and designed by Janina Firmalo-Herrera, the Marble Tray was chosen as Best Product Design for Holiday Décor and Gifts. P&B Valises et Compagnie, Inc. took the Best Booth Display citation, while MASAECO was given the Special Citation for Best Eco-Design for its Gold Paper Bowls designed by Jinggoy Buensuceso.
Katha Awards gives distinction to ingenious designs and encourages exporters to raise their design standards for Philippine export products and pursue a skillful exploration of new materials/processes.
Since its inception in the early 80s, Katha Awards has been distinguished as a hallmark of Philippine product design excellence and innovation. It is an emblem and statement that seeks to inspire and challenge exporters and designers to constantly create and develop original designs for furniture, home décor and furnishings, holiday décor and gifts, and fashion complements relevant in the global market.
The prestigious award is one of the highlights of Manila FAME, a bi-annual design-driven event organized by CITEM, the export promotions arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The country’s premier international lifestyle trade show opens on Thursday (Oct. 15) with highly visible participation of exporters from India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan, highlighting the event’s global character and the Philippines’ emerging image as a design creativity hub.
“The exhibits at this forthcoming October edition 2015 of Manila FAME will bring to the fore both the similarities and differences among the lifestyle export products of Asia’s constituent economies,” said Executive Director Rosvi C. Gaetos of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the event’s organizer and the export promotions arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
“It is here (Manila FAME) where we may see Asia’s collective strength as a regional trade bloc, and assess the actual global competitiveness of Philippine lifestyle exports vis-à-vis those of our fellow Asians, especially in terms of universal appeal and market acceptance,” Gaetos said of the estimated 5,000 international trade visitors and buyers expected to swarm the event at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, during its 4-day run up to Oct. 18.
The foreign exporters will have their products exhibited at the Manila FAME’s International Hall, where their fashion items, furniture and furnishings, home décor, gifts and premium will be arrayed with those of the Philippines in other special settings, all occupying the entire 17,156-sqm exhibit space of the SMX.
The special settings for the Philippine export exhibits are the Artisan Villages for artisanal crafts, The Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure for a rare blend of the classic and the modern in houseware design, the Light & Shadow for the industry’s new lighting interpretations for 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies as proclaimed by the United Nations, the Red Box program for the design collections of today’s generation of budding professionals and manufacturers, the Manila Wear for tropical fashion expressions, the NeoTextiles Philippines for the country’s commercially viable and globally competitive fabrics, and the OTOP (one town, one product) Marketplace for regional entrepreneurial development as manifested by community-based but export-quality products.
All in all, over 400 exhibitors from the top ranks of the country’s lifestyle export industry have been tapped by CITEM for the 62nd Manila FAME, which is seen to yield spot sales of up to P73 million for domestic consumption and $26.5 million for foreign, a big leap from the year-ago level of P45.13 million domestic, and $13.38 million export.
The previous Manila FAME October edition drew more than 300 exhibitors and over 3,000 foreign and local trade visitors and buyers as against this year’s target of 450 and 5,000.
To address them at the welcome reception as guest of honor is DTI Secretary Gregory Domingo, who will open the show and present the winners of the Katha Awards, a special distinction conferred on exporters and designers for exceptional product quality and design in various export categories.
Invited to join Domingo at the ceremonies, according to Gaetos, are Governors Joey Salceda of Albay and Ramil Hernandez of Laguna to represent the local government units in the Artisan Villages exhibition, and DTI Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya, Agriculture Undersecretary Emerson Palad, Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority Officer-in-Charge Dr. Clarito Barron, and DTI regional directors in Cagayan Valley, Southern Tagalog, Bicol and Davao, and provincial directors in Laguna and Albay.
Assisting CITEM in organizing Manila FAME are business support and trade promotion organizations such as the Foreign Trade Service Corps, DTI regional and provincial offices, Philippine embassies, local government units, Foreign Buyers Association of the Philippines, Bureau of Domestic Trade, Export Marketing Bureau, and the Department of Agriculture – Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service.
Manila FAME is the Philippines’ biggest international trade fair for exports from various industry sectors and communities. It is one of the longest-running trade shows in Asia Pacific and the only event approved by the Union des Foires Internationales (UFI), the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry.

Jinggoy Buensuceso is a Filipino visual artist specializing in metal sculpture. His linear style evokes stories of oneself, culture, and way of life through the use of lines. Buensuceso is also an emerging figure in Philippine furniture design. He is a three-time Mugna awardee, a co-founder of Epoch, a movement of six young, international artists who provoke new thinking in Philippine furniture design and he is part of the international design team of Hive under the mentorship of Kenneth Cobonpue.

Olivia d’Aboville is a young French-Filipino artist who specializes in tapestry and textile structures and adapted the techniques to create her own woven forms. She has been exploring sculpting with textile techniques since then. Her works range from textile jewelry to sculptures, to lighting designs and installation art.
D’Aboville has exhibited in museums, galleries, hotels and festivals in Paris, Lyon, Hong Kong, Manila, New York and Singapore. Most recently, Olivia was selected by Elle Decoration to be among 25 international artists/designers to exhibit their work at the magazine’s 25th anniversary at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

Inigo Elizalde currently lives and works in New York City. His design inspirations come from nature, such as landscapes and weather conditions, the shimmer of light on water, his fondness for ethnic fabrics, and from his fascination with his hometown of Manila.
“Design Philippines is progressive. It’s nice to note that Filipino designers are starting to rediscover and reinvest in locally available and sustainable resources to produce fresh and innovative designs.”
Ito has a profound appreciation for Philippine creativity and craftsmanship, for designs that exude beauty; designs, he says, that are purely Filipino. “If my pieces can speak, its language will be Filipino and will not require an interpreter,” he confides. Ito looks forward to working with natural materials that are abundant in the Philippines.
“Design Philippines has never lost touch with its traditional crafts and techniques. It has always attempted to marry it with modern sensibilities for its form and approach to materials.”
Leeroy New is a sculptor, artist, and designer whose work is an attempt to overlap and intersect with the different forms of visual arts including film, theater and fashion. He regularly seeks the occasion to present his work whenever, however, and wherever he feels like it or is allowed to in the hopes of ‘affecting’, more rather than less.
“Design Philippines, in spite of economic and political constraints, has long been at par with the best in the world. I am so proud of the talent and ingenuity of the Filipino.”
Eric Paras is not a minimalist, yet his aesthetic leans towards clean lines that emphasize textures and neutral colors, such as white, brown and gray.
Paras started out as a freelance designer but now works with Randy Vargas, owner of Vivere Lifestyles, the holding company of Vienna Furnitures, which specializes in products made from gmelina, a sustainable product, and other related businesses such as Industria Living and Triboa Bay.
“The flavor of Philippine design, I would say, would almost always have a unique flair for humor and a soulful craftsmanship that pays tribute to our natural materials.”
Luisa Robinson is an advocate of modern and clean design. She emphasizes materiality: the substance in design inherent in a material that leads to a synthesis of form and function. She is keen on integrating natural indigenous materials with modern technology and applications.
A recipient of numerous Katha and Mugna awards for best product design and material innovation and a merit award for furniture design in Singapore, Luisa was recently honored as one of the Top Ten Design Iconoclasts by The Philippine School of Interior Design. She recently launched her own line of home accessories under the brand LUISA.
“I can describe Design Philippines as something that is constantly transforming. It’s amazing to see various indigenous materials being transferred into beautiful products.”
Wataru Sakuma is a Japanese designer whose background in Fine Arts drives the designs he creates for Masa Ecological Development, Inc. He was granted a scholarship in New York in a program affiliated with Parsons School of Design. Choosing to work with pineapple and banana fiber to create handmade paper, his works naturally exude a zen quality. His outstanding designs earned him honors in the Katha Awards in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010 as well as the Mugna Awards of Manila Now.
Vito Selma has worked under Raffaella Mangiarotti in Milan and under interior designer George de Haast in Johannesburg, South Africa.
His design style is a reflection of everything around him — shapes, textures and colors of everything that is natural. He is also very much inspired by the aesthetics of Japanese and Scandinavian design movements: natural, simple and architectural.
