Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure
With 33 years as Asia’s barometer for the global home, fashion and craft trade, Manila FAME, The Design and Lifestyle Event, opens this 15-18 October 2015 with a breathtaking collection from German designer Detlef Klatt that celebrates the good life as interpreted through the expert hands of 21 Philippine exporters in collaboration with the country’s most talented artisans and craftsmen. The entire collection will be curated and presented in Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure, a special event feature located at the ground floor of the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.
Inspired by the ethos of “gusto” which translates into hearty or keen enjoyment, Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure is an exuberant collection of dinnerware, home accents, and holiday décor, complemented by select artisanal food products. The collection promises a neo-baroque experience in living with its decorative embellishments and luxurious attention to details. It is a bold expression of a life well-lived as translated in a setting in black and white, and infused with touches of gold.
The Manila Gusto Gallery is a combined concept store and coffee shop. It speaks of harmony and significant connections despite differences. It encourages consumers to create a symphony of synergies among contrasting elements. The bar serves as a venue to mingle and share heart-to-heart conversations with friends over a cup of coffee; the gallery presents functional and decorative items that embody all things that make life more pleasurable; and the concept store encourages consumers to take home pieces that reflect their heart’s desires, and remind them of the grandeur of life and its decadences.
Product designs, especially developed by Detlef Klatt for the companies participating in the special setting, vary in style to highlight each company’s capability and strength. The products may diverge into extreme, mellow, sophisticated, natural among others, depending on the resources and identity of the company-participant. Despite the different product categories, the classical elements in the setting bind them for cohesion, according to Klatt.
Klatt also speaks of the longevity and high appraisal for products sporting a classical theme. “Products with classical looks are seen as timeless, and people appreciate them as high-value,” Klatt explains. He also notes that there is a big demand for these products, but there is an inadequacy in quality suppliers worldwide. Klatt sees this as an opportunity for the Philippine export industry.
Klatt also remarks that a classical theme will be easily understood by Filipino craftsmen because of the Spanish influence embedded in the Philippine culture. “It is normal to Filipinos because you see it your churches, in the curves and carved details in your furniture,” he says.

Shellcraft, Joami International Trading, Manila Precious Moments, MCCA, Marykel, Navidad Crafts Export Corporation, Obra Nicolas, P&B Valises, Peter and Paul, and Philippines Treasures, Prado, and Sarilinlikha Novelties / Abaca Art Atelier of Manila.
The Manila Gusto Gallery: In Pursuit of Pleasure is an enticement, a visual and tactile invitation to be bold, to live a life full of passion, to seize life’s precious moments, and to create significant connections.
International product development specialist Detlef Klatt from Germany is set to transform Manila FAME with a special setting of handcrafted tabletops under the Design for Exports Program of the country’s premier design and lifestyle event Manila FAME for its 60th edition.
Manila FAME will feature a collection of tabletops, which include dinnerware, flatware, and other table accessories, produced by 17 different home design companies using different materials and techniques. The special setting, with the supervision of Klatt, is developed under CITEM’s Design for Exports Program which aims to translate trend-forward designs into products that have strong commercial value.
The Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Philippines Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), organizes the bi-annual Manila FAME, which continuously nurtures and promotes Philippine design in the global market. Design for Exports is CITEM’s multi-tiered and multi-faceted assistance program that provides Philippine exporters, manufacturers, and designers with a full range of design and product development services.
The Design for Exports Program seeks to provide Manila FAME buyers a wider range of merchandise. With the help of this program, Manila FAME will promote and market the Philippines as Asia’s design trendsetter and as the leading source destination for creative export products and services in Asia.
“CITEM will once again excite buyers and guests to the show with the newly-revived category of tabletops. It is equally important to increase the number of exhibitors carrying ceramics and pottery and to boost the product development for natural fibers,” said CITEM Executive Director Rosvi Gaetos.
Klatt will provide product and material development assistance to local manufacturers to create a diverse yet cohesive range of merchandise, particularly ceramics, pottery, and other table top categories. Klatt worked with leading home design companies including Asia Ceramics, Asia Embroidery, Basket and Weaves, Bon-Ace Fashion Tools, Celestial Arts, Chanalli, CSM Philippines, Filtra, Globeasia Nature Industries, Maria Vinecraft, MCCA Industrial Corp., Oricon, Prado Filipino Artisans, Robles Heritage, Shell Arts, Shelmed Cottage Treasures, and TADECO Home, and assisted them in maximizing business opportunities through product development, market intelligence, and buyer matching.
As part of Klatt’s assistance on material and product development, he has embarked on visits to participating companies located in Bicol, Cebu, Davao, Metro Manila, Pampanga, and Tarlac where he did an evaluation on the materials and techniques utilized by each company. Along with the assessment of each company was his introduction of the program and his concept for the special setting.
“I know the potential of this country as a source of finely crafted products. In the Philippines are materials which you will not find anywhere else. On one side, the materials and techniques show creativity. On the other side, each has a character and tells a story,” said Klatt when asked about his collaboration with the Philippine companies, adding that the companies were very open and enthusiastic to the idea of working with him to develop new products.
Manila FAME is a global platform for the country’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which features certified, export-quality products such as furniture and furnishings, holiday gifts and décor, garments, and fashion accessories designed and crafted in the Philippines for the global market. It is the second longest-running trade show in the Asia-Pacific, and is the only trade event in the country that is approved by Union des Foires Internationales (UFI), the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry.
The 60th Manila FAME is slated at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay on October 16-19.
