The Philippines’ premier design and lifestyle event is expanding the show for October 2016 – with more venues, extended exhibit hours, more SME exporters, and more special showcases for new artisans, designers, and products
Five venues to accommodate more exhibitors
The 64th edition of Asia-Pacific’s second-longest running trade exhibition, Manila FAME, will be held in five large venues to accommodate the growing number of participating SME exporters and the deluge of international trade buyers joining every edition to source unique products of Philippine artisans.
The upcoming show in October 20-22, 2016 will be held at the World Trade Center (WTC) Main Hall, which will house the holiday and home exporters, and the WTC Tent, which will feature fashion, textile, and apparel brands. The Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC) will exhibit arts and crafts, and start-up and retail companies, while HallONE will be the venue for the Design Week Philippines’ (DWP) Creative Marketplace. Intramuros will host the second component of Design Week Philippines called Creative Environment.
Design Week Philippines, held concurrently with Manila FAME, is a multifaceted fête of the arts and design aimed at fostering creativity and spurring innovations. It is highlighted with activities that speak of Filipino ingenuity and design breakthroughs that strengthen the Philippines’ position as Asia’s design capital.
In addition to the special DWP events to be held at HallONE, more activities initiated by Design Center of the Philippines (DCP) will take place in Manila’s historic center, Intramuros. DCP is CITEM’s supporting agency.
Extended exhibit hours to let in more trade buyers and visitors
Manila FAME October 2016 edition will extend its operating hours from the original 9:00AM-6:00PM to 9:00AM-7:00PM. The change was made in response to trade buyers’ request for longer business hours that would allow them to meet with all their target suppliers in Manila FAME, examine new products at the show, and maximize their visit in Asia, which will have other trade events scattered across the region.
New special showcases and daily events to update trade buyers and visitors on what’s hot
Exciting showcases to look forward to in the October show include New Generation Weaves, Bamboo and Coconut Special Setting, Lamps & Lighting, and Icon Setting: Peacock Redux.
Lively daily events to update trade buyers on on-trend designs and products as well as inspiring and creative workshops and business fora will be staged for a multi-sensory, comprehensive, and diverse trade show experience.
Furthermore, the 64th Manila FAME will be made even more momentous with the celebration of the ASEAN Master Craft Design Festival and the participation of the ASEAN Master Craftsmen who will present their creations in a special pavilion called ASEAN Crafts to the World. The first group of the ASEAN Master Craftsmen, coming from the countries Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam, will unveil new designs and progressive applications of native materials and traditional techniques in home furnishings, gifts and housewares, garden accessories, and fashion apparels.

Organized by the Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), Manila FAME is the only trade event in the Philippines approved by the Union des Foires Internationals (UFI), or the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, a Paris-based association of trade fair organizers founded 90 years ago in Milan, Italy, on April 1925.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) staged just recently Slingshot Philippines 2016, the National Summit on Startups and Innovation, at the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC) in Pasay City, kicking off a two-day national summit on startups and innovation with the theme, “Accelerating the Innovation Economy.”
The two-day summit provided an opportunity to gather under one roof young minds with big ideas, innovators in constant pursuit of new things to benefit their community, supportive investors who fund start-up ideas and the policymakers whose role is to provide an enabling business environment.
The event kicked off national consultations for the crafting of policies and programs to develop a new breed of innovative enterprises, covering the fields of agriculture, biotechnology, electronics, and digital startups, among others.
Around 50 speakers and panelists spoke on issues concerning funding, the current status and the future of Philippine startups, and strategies towards a Philippine innovation economy before 577 conference delegates who gathered at Slingshot Philippines 2016 to actively take part in a government-initiated platform for public dialogue and partnership that will help boost the development of Philippine startups for a robust innovation economy.
“Changing the ecosystem and putting in place policies responsive to the needs of the innovativion economy will not happen overnight. However, close collaboration of the government and key players will enable the Philippines to foster the desired new breed of business more quickly and efficiently. We want the next big tech startup to come from the Philippines ,” said Trade Secretary Adrian Cristobal, Jr.
Secretary Cristobal, a steadfast advocate of MSMEs as an integral part of the country’s pursuit towards regional economic integration and the attainment of equitable and inclusive growth, pointed out the government’s main role in the upbringing of the innovation economy. DTI has started implementing programs such as Slingshot to help overcome the hindrances that constrain the growth of MSMEs as well as provide startups and innovative businesses an environment that will nurture their capabilities.
In 2015, the Philippine government and startup community unveiled a roadmap which will serve as a framework in building a thriving ecosystem in the next few years. From a hundred, the country targets to have 500 startups with total valuation of USD2 B by 2020. This roadmap also serves as the basis for Senator Paolo “Bam” Aquino IV’s Startup Bill which is set to be filed at the 17th Congress in July. This proposed policy will exempt startup entrepreneurs from paying taxes in their first two years, enabling an inclusive growth to their budding business.
For three years in the senate, Senator Aquino has been the forerunner of six startup-friendly policies that support the innovation community. Among these are the Go Negosyo Act (RA 10644) which initiates the establishment of ‘Negosyo Centers’ that create linkages to bigger markets and financing as well as provide jobs and livelihood to people, the Microfinance NGOs Act (RA 10693) which supports the groups that guide and empower micro entreprenuers, and the Youth Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy Act (RA 10679) which builds a culture of entrepreneurship as an alternative solution to unemployment and underemployment.
“Why (support) MSMEs? Because we must. Our MSME sector is at the forefront of pushing the growth of the Philippines,” said Senator Paolo “Bam” Aquino IV, chair of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship.
For her part, Trade Undersecretary Nora Terrado of the Industry Promotions Group (IPG) commended the local economy’s unyielding growth despite the many challenges the country faces with the global economic slowdown. “We have gained momentum, but we can do more. We realized from our dialogues with the private sector that our country can benefit from a far-reaching and scalable innovation within a well-planned, well-organized government supported frameworks,” said Terrado.
Over the past few years, the Philippine economy has shown a promising ground for the startup community. In 2015, the country jumped 83rd in the Global Innovation Index, 17 notches higher from its previous rank in 2014. Bloomberg Businessweek also revealed that the Philippines’ ranked sixth among the top countries where talents are being sourced.
The current status of the Philippine economy will serve as a viable launching pad for local startups and innovators to make it in the global market. The country is the second fastest-growing economy in Asia next to China and it currently flourishes from a positive business climate, a population of young, English-proficient speakers; and the stable remittances from overseas Filipinos.
Slingshot Philippines 2016 was the direct offshoot of Slingshot Manila 2015, the official startup and innovation event for the Philippines’ hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organized by the DTI in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and other key industry stakeholders. It was held in conjunction with the recently concluded 63rd edition of Manila FAME and Design Week Philippines (DWP).
World-renowned Chilean designer Nelson Sepulveda to participate in Manila FAME October 2016 edition
Chilean designer, scenographer, and stylist Nelson Sepulveda presents his creative ideas on his would-be special setting in the October edition of Manila FAME during his recent visit in the 63rd edition of the trade show this April. He spoke about the importance of ‘romanticizing the handmade and abstracting everyday objects’ in doing design before a group of students, exhibitors, members of the press, and representatives of the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP) and the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM). For the October 2016 show edition, Sepulveda will collaborate closely with the international trend consulting company Edelkoort Etc. to develop designs for Philippine handcrafted baskets using natural materials, with the possibility of expanding the product lineup to include other everyday objects.
RIPPLES Plus highlights globally competitive SMEs at Manila FAME
The Regional Interactive Platform for Philippine Exporters (RIPPLES) Plus is a partnership program of the Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) with the Department of Trade and Industry-Regional Operations Development Group’s (DTI-RODG) Export Pathways Program (EPP). It enables the regional and provincial staff to handhold potential exporters through capacity-building trainings and provides direct interventions (e.g., product designs, market info seminars, compliance with market requirements, export marketing activities, and international trade fair participation) to potential and existing exporters enrolled under the EPP. The program aims to expand the supply base of globally competitive products and services as well as increase Philippine exports and international market shares. The Artisans Village tells the stories of crafts from the islands
Lifestyle designer PJ Arañador teams up with product specialists Imelda Datul and Rachel Dagñalan in a creative collaboration with the local governments, regional offices of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and 45 SMEs from Albay, Cagayan, Davao, and Laguna. The Artisans Village plays a significant role in protecting, preserving and promoting the arts and crafts of the islands. It aims to celebrate the work of local artisans and master craftsmen highly skilled in weaving, wood carving, metal forging, and other various forms of traditional crafts. The Artisans Village at the 63rd Manila FAME is open until April 24. It remains to be one of the favorite trade show highlights of Manila FAME trade buyers and guests alike.

Design Trails by Bambike at the Design Week Philippines

Manila FAME, the country’s premier design and lifestyle event, returns to its April season to bring the global trade buyers to the optimal buying cycle at the World Trade Center in Pasay City on April 21-24. For its 63rd show edition, the trade fair evolves into a boutique show featuring a more sophisticated, more exclusive and tightly curated show.
With the theme “Iridescence,” a portrayal of the colorful character of the design and lifestyle event of Asia, Manila FAME will headline an ever-growing showcase of export-quality Philippine designer pieces for the home, holiday, and fashion sectors in a well-coordinated boutique setting. Spring Forward and Y’ARI are Manila FAME’s special highlights this April under CITEM’s Design for Exports program, a multi-tiered and multi-faceted assistance program which provides Philippine exporters, manufacturers, and designers with a full range of design and product development services. The program brings together both local and international designers and business experts, as well as both young and seasoned industry players to create finely crafted products in the home and fashion sectors designed for the global market.
Spring Forward will showcase handpicked local creations from the country’s craftsmen, artisans, and young designers. Furniture designer and interior design consultant Ito Kish will ‘reimagine’ the season of renewal through a symphony of greens and hanging light bulbs, brought together by solid black marble table tops that puts focus on the versatility and the potential of Philippine products.
Y’ARI will highlight the intersection of artisanal production in various Philippines villages and the interventions used to modernize this production, with Marian Roces as lead curator. The exhibition will showcase textiles, accessories, and ornaments crafted from native materials such as piña silk, beads, pearls, and gold to convey the level of quality that is being matched by modern transformations. With a haute design concept on hand, the exhibit will depart from typical trade show approaches.
Trade buyers and visitors will also get to experience the Philippines’ distinct character and rich inventory of traditions and talents through The Artisans Village, which aims to protect, preserve and promote the arts and crafts of the islands. As in previous Manila FAME show editions, Red Box will continue to inspire design enthusiasts with an inspirational showcase of fresh home and fashion ideas. Red Box is a design development that continues to develop junior designers through an ongoing talent and development and mentorship program. For the April 2016 edition, Red Box will feature the iconic designs of junior designers Joseph Rastrullo and Rachelle Dagñalan who will develop a conceptual display based on Manila FAME’s theme “Iridescence,” under the mentorship of Budji Layug, the creative director of Manila FAME.
The presence of OTOP (One Town, One Product) manufacturers will once again highlight handcrafted products made by skilled Filipino craftsmen from various local communities. It is a project of the DTI-Bureau of Domestic Trade Promotions (DTI-BDTP).
Manila FAME will coincide with the celebration of Design Week Philippines (DWP), which fosters connections between creative industry practitioners and design enthusiasts in an interactive sharing of knowledge, ideas, and trends.
Now on its 9th bi-annual staging, Design Week Philippines will provide “the richest, most exciting, most meaningful ways to group, gather, and bond people.” The theme for April 2016 is “Connection” which refers to the creative attempt to bring together people from diverse backgrounds and culture to interact and share their creativity with each other, with Intramuros as DWP’s first design district.

HYBRID, an art and design group composed of Jinggoy Buensuceso, Wataru Sakuma, and Stanley Ruiz collaborate on an installation that fuses light and time to form an enchanting 3D imprint mid-air that mimics the colors of the Aurora Borealis. This installation is made in celebration of United Nations’ proclamation of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies to bring to life Filipino creativity and imagination through a unique interpretation of light.
CITEM strengthens its commitment to developing and nurturing globally competitive Philippine micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), exporters, designers, and manufacturers as Manila FAME serves as an MSME incubator.
The One Town, One Product (OTOP) program features select small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that make use of the country’s indigenous raw materials and local skills and talents. Upholding the global competitiveness of Philippine products, the OTOP program of the Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT) of the DTI is a priority project of the government to promote entrepreneurship and job creation in the country’s various regions.
NeoTextiles Philippines continues with a vibrant showcase of textiles that marries the age-old weaving tradition of ethnic communities with modern and innovative 21st century techniques.
Red Box is a designer development program which aims to nurture the next generation of Philippine designers. Red Box works with emerging talents by matching them with local manufacturers to create fresh concepts that reflect their unique design sensibilities.
Red Box Design Talents is a platform to discover and nurture young designers. 14 finalists handpicked from over 140 aspirants by a high-caliber jury of design professionals under the mentorship of celebrated design icons Budji Layug and Lulu Tan-Gan were thoroughly immersed in a unique design and development process and close collaboration with manufacturers. The result is a renewed understanding and intimate knowledge of the process of design, material and craft techniques.
Designers Lilianna Manahan, Joseph Rastrullo, and Rachelle Dagñalan, who have been part of the Red Box Program since 2013 and are continuing their design journey as the country’s next generation of designers.
For the October 2015 edition, the three designers are given the freedom to create and curate individual spaces reflective of their design aesthetic. The showcase provides a glimpse into their growth as designers, individually and collectively.
International Exhibitors Pavilions
The International Hall houses companies from India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, and Taiwan carrying fashion items, furniture and furnishings, home décor, gifts, and premiums. Taiwan will introduce 60 brands under its Taiwan Excellence brand. These participating countries recognize the huge potential of the Philippine consumer market and are ready to tap the vast opportunities offered by the country’s growing affluence.
Parallel Event: Design Week Philippines
Design Week Philippines is a multi-faceted platform that brings together creative visionaries from diverse backgrounds and disciplines in a series of programs and events that celebrate design and artistry. It has its roots from Proclamation No. 277 signed by President Benigno S. Aquino III on October 20, 2011, where he declares the third week of March and October of each year as Design Week Philippines. It has thus become a national agenda that nurtures the creativity and design capability of the Philippines to spur innovations directed towards ushering in of trade opportunities, and positioning the Philippines as Asia’s design destination.
Design Week Philippines has three components—Design Talks, Design Tours, and Creative Environment—that will be held inside and outside of the SMX Convention Center in the duration of the event.
Design Talks, the key thought platform on design and creativity, masters and industry movers from various creative industries will flesh out the key values of the maker culture in a three-module forum to provide insight towards the co-creation of a better future.
Design Tours journeys north of Manila to highlight Pampanga as more than just the culinary capital of the country. It will take Manila FAME VIBs (very important buyers) and special guests to Pampanga to witness age old living traditions.
Starting this edition, Design Week Philippines will be rolled-out to key cities in the Metro through Creative Environment to reach an even broader audience and bring together a diverse group of design enthusiasts that encourages dynamic meet-ups and exciting encounters with members of the creative class.
For the Creative Environment component, The Design Week Philippines partners with Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) and SMX Aura for the celebration of Filipino Talent in the field of animation as they hold Animahenasyon 2015: 9th Philippine Animation Festival on 15-16 October 2015.

Harrison Compound tenants The Henry Hotel, Atelier of Mr. Jojie Lloren, Artelano 11 and Avellana Art Gallery likewise opens their space exclusively for select Manila FAME guests and buyers on 16 October 2015 for “Conversations at 2680 F.B. Harrison Compound,” a curated event where design, art, architecture and fashion intersect.
The Asia Cosplay Meet Philippines, organized by the Norman Goss Training Services in cooperation with Asia Cosplay Meet main organizer Singapore Cosplay Club and in partnership with Intramuros Administration, is set to select a three-person cosplay team that will represent the country in the upcoming Asia Cosplay Meet 2015.
Hallmark of Philippine Design Excellence
Since its inception in the early 80s, Katha Awards has been distinguished as an important hallmark of Philippine product design excellence and innovation. It is an emblem and statement that seeks to inspire and challenge exporters and designers to constantly create and develop original designs for furniture, home décor and furnishings, holiday décor and gifts, and fashion complements relevant in the global market.
The major categories of Katha Awards are Best Product Design (Furniture, Houseware/Furnishings, Holiday Décor and Gifts, and Fashion), Best Booth Display, and an Eco-Design Award as a special citation. This is the company’s first time to do a creative collaboration with CITEM in support of design and innovation. Its participation in the event created an opportunity for the Max’s Group of Companies to talk to new markets unfamiliar to the brand.
Carrying the campaign #SarapToDesign and call to action of “#SarapToDesign…anong i-de-design mo,” the Max’s Group of Companies collaborated with WeeWillDoodle, the Philippines’ premier doodle and illustration art group composed of fine young artists, which allowed the youth to challenge the limitations of creativity.
The idea was to put up blank spaces (3D Max’s logo and freedom wall) in the exhibition area where the group WeeWillDoodle and Manila FAME guests doodled and expressed their thoughts, making Max’s area highly interactive.
The campaign #SarapToDesign was aligned with the Max’s slogan “Sarap to the Bones.” It promoted the company’s goal not just to offer good food but to allow the brand to engage in activities relevant to the millenials. Likewise, the campaign encouraged guests and participants to create, collaborate, and engage through doodling and design.
After its successful collaboration with Manila FAME during the show’s 61st edition, Max’s Group of Companies’ Director and Vice President for Marketing Jim Fuentebella is open for another partnership with CITEM in the future.
“We would like to advance Max’s by partnering with the country’s emerging designers to showcase the Filipino craft in different hotels and restaurants owned by the company. Through Manila FAME and Design Week Philippines, we were able to meet a wide roster of talents who can work with us in developing our architectural and fixtures requirements,” said Fuentebella.
Design Week Philippines is a multi-faceted platform that brings together creative visionaries from diverse backgrounds and disciplines in a series of programs and events that celebrate design and artistry. Proclamation No. 277, signed by President Benigno S. Aquino III on 20 October 2011, declares the third week of March and October of each year as Design Week Philippines.
Positioning the Philippines as Asia’s design destination, Design Week Philippines fosters connections between creative industry practitioners and design enthusiasts in an interactive sharing of knowledge, ideas, and trends. It has become a national agenda that nurtures the creativity and design capability of the Filipinos to usher in trade opportunities.
Supporting the Philippines’ position as a sourcing hub for creative and design-forward home and fashion products, Manila FAME 2015, organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), features anew selected furniture and home furnishings, holiday gifts and décor, and fashion accessories designed and crafted in the Philippines for the global market in its 61st edition on March 13-16, 2015 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.
CITEM founded Manila FAME initially as an event that only showcased locally made products. Through the years, it grew to the level of producing not only an event, but stories – stories of exporters and manufacturers, nurtured and developed by CITEM through its various programs such as Design Philippines, Red Box and Manila Wear. These stories continued to grow in numbers, continuously translated into products which promoted the perfect combination of innovativeness, technology and soul.
“Besides strengthening and developing skills and competencies of homegrown artists from different sectors, Manila FAME assists local exporters and manufacturers in establishing partnerships, generating export opportunities, and finally penetrating the world’s lucrative business markets,” said CITEM Executive Director Rosvi C. Gaetos.
Design Philippines, the industry brand for furniture and home furnishings, is curated by a Creative Team composed of seasoned designers from various sectors, brought Manila FAME to a higher level by taking exhibitors who embraced the brand building initiatives of CITEM, to participate in international trade fairs such as Salone in Milan, Italy, Maison ‘d Objet in Paris, France and Anuga in Cologne, Germany.
Red Box is a program which develops aspiring designers to penetrate the market. One such story is a group of designers who named themselves Epoch, began as young, unknown designers of functional items for companies 4 years ago and are now successful manufacturers themselves. Their story, The Return of the Epoch, will be featured in a special setting aptly called “ The Light & Shadow” lighting installation. Appropriately timed with the UN General Assembly proclamation of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015), it presents the collaboration of designers Stanley Ruiz, Wataru Sakuma, and Jinggoy Buensuceso with select companies to feature the growing sector of lamps and lighting.
Sure to draw fashion enthusiasts is Manila Wear, which will unveil Luxe fashion collections derived from a group of fashion designers who uses indigenous materials to create bespoke items. Manila Wear is a branding initiative which aims to position the Philippine fashion industry in the market.
Still aimed at promoting local exports in the world market, the Manila FAME International Hall brings together under one roof exhibitors from different countries, tapping the international as well as the local markets. It provides a fresh sourcing venue for trade buyers from around the world who come regularly to Manila FAME.
Fortifying CITEM’s commitment in upholding the global competitiveness of Philippine products, on the other hand, is the One Town, One Product (OTOP) program of the Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT) of DTI, a priority project of the government to promote entrepreneurship and job creation in the country’s various regions. This edition, OTOP manufacturers will team up with designers to showcase latest collections from different regions.
Katha Awards, the hallmark of Philippine design excellence, will open the 61st edition of Manila FAME through the recognition of companies whose product designs and innovation combine the ideals of form and function. Katha Awards has sought to inspire and challenge Philippine exporters and designers to innovate and develop designs and products competitive and comparative to its counterparts in the world market.
