The country’s top product designs were given due recognition in the recently concluded Katha Awards in the 60th show edition of Manila FAME, the country’s premiere design and lifestyle event staged by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM).
In celebration of Design Week Philippines, Katha Awards gives distinction to ingenious designs and encourages exporters to raise their design standards for Philippine export products and pursue a skillful exploration of new materials/processes. Design Week Philippines is a multi-faceted platform that brings together creative visionaries from diverse backgrounds and disciplines in a series of programs and events that celebrate design and artistry.
The Katha Awardees for October 2014 are B-Luxe Chair by Ito Kish of Ito Kish (Best Product Design for Furniture); Flutty Candy Light by Jude Tiotuico of Industria (Best Product Design for Home Décor); Calli-Ideal Design by Tessa Nepomuceno of Tixxi Handbags Mfg. (Best Product Design for Fashion); Paper Finials by Arlene Gaddi-Maceda and Arthur Gaddi of Paper Capers(Best Product Design for Holiday Décor and Gifts); Schema (Best Booth Display); and the Crystal Clock by Wataru Sakuma of MASAECO (Special Citation: Eco-Design Award).
Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo, Trade Undersecretary Ponciano Manalo, Jr., CITEM’s Executive Director Rosvi Gaetos, and local and foreign trade buyers graced the Katha Awards awarding ceremony hosted by TV personality Issa Litton.
CITEM is the export promotions arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
The 60th edition of Manila FAME unveiled recently the second edition of NeoTextiles Philippines that underlined the Filipino weaving artisans’ craftwork and artistry. Held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Manila FAME is the Asia’s premier design and lifestyle event that exhibits the finest Philippine-made products from the home, holiday, and fashion sectors.
This edition of NeoTextiles Philippines brought the spotlight on six weaving communities from the Visayas and Mindanao regions. The featured Visayan textiles and manufacturers were piña by Heritage Arts and Crafts of Aklan, Philippine silk by Negros Silk Manufacturers’ Association of Negros Occidental, hablon by Salngan Multi-Purpose Cooperative with Tinukib of Iloilo, and raffia textile by Tubigon Loomweavers Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Bohol. The Mindanao textiles and manufacturers were hinabol by the Higaunon Women Weavers of Bukidnon with CustomMade Crafts Center and t’nalak woven by the T’boli weavers of Klowil Multi-Purpose Cooperative in South Cotabato.
“The textiles produced by these ethnic communities boast of excellent quality. In light of the significant decline in textile trade and export, NeoTextiles Philippines will continuously provide a platform in helping promote the potential of the design and creative traditions of the country,” said Rosvi Gaetos, executive director of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM).
At the helm of the NeoTextiles Philippines special setting were two of the country’s young designers: Olivia d’Aboville (designer for home) and Amina Aranaz-Alunan (designer for fashion). D’Aboville exhibited modern home applications of the fabrics developed with the participating weaving communities, while Aranaz-Alunan designed collections of fashion wearables that showcased how indigenous textiles can both be trendy and functional.
Launched last year by the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through CITEM, its export promotions arm, the Material Development Program gave birth to NeoTextiles Philippines as a textile development and branding initiative for contemporary Philippine textiles.
Manila FAME proves once again that it is the country’s premiere design and lifestyle event as it showcased a host of finely crafted home, fashion, and holiday products that could attest that the Philippines is indeed an ideal sourcing destination in Asia for design-driven products.
As the signature event of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), Manila FAME drew a number of local and foreign buyers who happily sourced for designer products in the four-day trade show held recently at the SMX Convention Center.
“We do not just follow trends; we set them. Manila FAME continues to inspire with a strong design statement on what is design-forward, popular, artisanal, and soulful. It’s a design experience like no other,” said Rosvi Gaetos, executive director of CITEM.
In each show edition of Manila FAME, hundreds of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the home, holiday décor, and fashion industries are continually given a platform to promote their export-quality products to the world market.
For its 60th edition this October, Manila FAME featured products that were crafted according to the ‘design stories’ of Soulcrafts (heritage crafts), Luxe (luxury items) and Gen C (Millennial products), as it aimed to cater to the needs and interests of all audiences.
Event highlights were the Design Philippines Scenography, ‘Be Our Guest’: A Table Accessories Showcase, Manila Wear, NeoTextiles Philippines, Red Box, OTOP Marketplace,and the International Hall.
Under the creative direction of Budji Layug, the Design Philippines Scenography featured the latest designs from a collection crafted by designers and exhibitors of the Design for Exports program, as well as, choice pieces from brands under Design Philippines and Manila Wear. Designers Eric Paras and Stanley Ruiz collaborated with Layug in designing the Design Philippines installation, which featured a giant salakab made of bamboo to set the tone for the special setting made of select design-forward pieces from a gathering of the country’s brightest creative talents.
A tabletops setting titled “Be Our Guest” highlighted an eye-catching, ready-to-buy collection of table accessories developed under the Design for Exports Program by German master florist and designer Detlef Klatt, in collaboration with 17 manufacturers who are experts in working with materials such as abaca (a plant fiber), ceramic, wood, metal, capiz, mother of pearl, and other natural materials. On three 13-meter-long tables, over 800 table pieces such as baskets and bowls, trays and centerpieces, and tablecloths and placemats were laid out in an extraordinary presentation – a play of patterns, textures, and shapes that masterfully blended the table, products, and surrounding elements to create still-life compositions, as inspired by the street scenes of Berlin, New York, Tokyo, and Manila.
Fashionistas had a visual sampling of unique fashion pieces that combined artisanal crafts with contemporary sensibilities in Manila Wear, which featured a fresh collection in pursuit of personal style. International fashion icon Josie Natori curated the presentation and teamed up with fashion designers Cesar Gaupo, Lulu Tan-Gan, and JC Buendia.
NeoTextiles Philippines promoted the country’s indigenous fibers and textiles in support of local weaving communities. Designers Amina Aranaz-Alunan and Olivia d’Aboville provided new design directions to the participating textile manufacturers that created contemporary and versatile textiles and products for home and fashion.
Red Box Home Scenography presented the works of young designers Rachelle Dagñalan, Lilianna Manahan, Leeroy New, and Joseph Rastrullo who were matched with local manufacturers to create innovative products with a unique design sensibility. Red Box is a design development program of CITEM which aims to create the next generation of Philippine design talents.
The One Town, One Product (OTOP), a priority program of the Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT), showcased handcrafted pieces by skilled Filipino craftsmen whose skills have been passed on through generations of artisans. OTOP manufacturers teamed up with senior designers Viña Domingo-Roy and Rey Soliven, who both mentored Dagñalan and Rastrullo, to produce the latest collection from the regions.
Foreign exhibitors of home and fashion from Asia and the Pacific presented their export-quality products such as furniture, home décor, garments, fashion accessories, and scents in the International Hall. Participating countries were Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Taiwan.
Manila FAME is one of the longest-running trade shows in the Asia Pacific, and is the only trade event in the country approved by the Union des Foires Internationales (UFI), the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry. The 61st show edition will be held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on March 13-16, 2015.
Giving life to the three stories of Soulcrafts, Luxe and Gen C underlining the recently concluded 60th edition of Manila FAME was the Design Philippines Scenography, designed under the creative direction of Budji Layug.
The showcase featured the latest designs from a collection crafted by designers Stanley Ruiz and Eric Paras with special participation of select brands of Design Philippines and Manila Wear with strong potential to become the next wave of design-driven companies.
The Center for International Trade Expositions & Missions (CITEM) teamed up with these two notable senior designers, Eric Paras handled the Home Accents collection and Stanley Ruiz for the Furniture collections of Design Philippines. With Luxe, Gen C and Soulcraft as its cohesive storyline, these merchandise stories gave direction and consistency and provided the companies the rare opportunity to position themselves in the market.
“Brand stories will be the future especially for an industry that is having a slump and is unceasingly affected by commercialism. I strongly believe that the Filipino export companies, specifically in the furniture and furnishing industry, have the competitive edge in the global market. We are well known with our ingenuity and adaptability to global culture and designs,” said Paras.
“These local companies are distinct in terms of capabilities, and we should capitalize on that,” Ruiz added.
Both designers worked relentlessly with 21 companies to highlight its respective strength and expertise in the production scenario and doubly ensure that it is properly translated into visual merchandising. These companies are A. Garcia Crafts, Asia Ceramics Corporation, Bon Ace Fashion Tools, Inc., Catalina Embroideries, Inc., Celestial Arts, Inc., Chanalli, Inc., Craft Mill Inc., DOMICILLO by Peter and Paul, Inc., Enpekei International,Inc., Industria Home Vico Manufacturing Corp., JB Woodcraft, Inc., Lampara Trends, Inc., Lightworks Resources, Inc., Masa Ecological Development, Inc. (MASAECO), Nature’s Legacy Eximport, Inc., Padi Outdoor,P&B Valises et Compagnie, Inc., S.C. Vizcarra Inc., South Sea Veneer, That One Piece Enterprise, and Venzon Lighting Manufacturing, with the special participation of existing Design Philippines brands KISH, MCCA Industrial Corp., and Schema by Kalikasan Crafts.
“Design Philippines is a brand- and market-driven goal; and has a long-term impact on the export competitiveness of both the industry and the participating companies. The program aims to position Design Philippines as the highest expression of CITEM’s mission as the purveyor of design, craftsmanship, value and hope,” said Rosvi Gaetos, CITEM executive director.
Design Philippines is a branding initiative that positions the Philippines as a sourcing destination for finely crafted products for the world market. NeoTextiles Philippines launched its second edition at the 60th edition of Manila FAME last October 16-19, 2014. Located at the second floor of the SMX Convention Center, NeoTextiles weaved together homegrown design talents and indigenous weaving communities to create contemporary Philippine textiles: fabrics that are ethnic-inspired yet versatile, artisanal yet progressive, world-class yet distinctly Filipino.
Designing pieces for NeoTextiles October 2014 were Olivia d’Aboville for Home and Amina Aranaz-Alunan for Fashion. Olivia d’Aboville, a Manila-based French-Filipino artist who specializes in tapestry and textile structures, was also the designer last October handling both Home and Fashion. This time, her home designs share the stage with fashion pieces from Amina Aranaz-Alunan, founder of Manila’s first specialized fashion and design college School of Fashion & the Arts (SoFA).
The recent edition featured six weaving communities coming from the Visayas and Mindanao regions – twice the number of textile manufacturer-participants as compared to last year’s introductory launch. Olivia worked with three weaving communities and their textiles which included the hablon by Salngan Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Iloilo, raffia by Tubigon Loomweavers Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Bohol and hinabol by the Higaunon Women Weavers of Bukidnon.
Olivia also teamed-up with CustomMade Crafts Center and Tinukib to produce Home items made of hinabol and hablon and with That One Piece to create eye-catching lamps using the developed fabrics. The communities taught her about the textiles they used and from the available textiles, that’s where she got ideas on what exactly to transform them into, specifically home accessories. Olivia also learned about the weaving patterns and techniques (ex. Suksok) they used on the communities’ textiles from which she drew inspiration to innovate further and implement these patterns into her designs.
As for Amina, she worked with piña by Heritage Arts and Crafts of Aklan, the Philippine silk by Negros Silk Manufacturers’ Association of Negros Occidental and the t’nalak woven by the T’boli weavers of Klowil Multi-Purpose Cooperative in South Cotabato. Amina also introduced the ARANÁZ chic collections of Fashion wearables using the NeoTextiles. Though it might have been challenging since it was her first time to experience handling textile design, it was definitely a great and learning experience to meet and work with the hardworking weavers of the communities.
The Material Development program of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), under the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), is a textile development initiative that seeks to develop and promote commercially-viable and globally-competitive fabrics and fabric-based products – through the brand NeoTextiles Philippines which had its first edition back in October 2013.
