“Light & Shadow,” a new highlight of the 61st edition of Manila FAME, Asia’s Premier Design & Lifestyle Event, brought together different minds, myriad of ideas, and varying materials with designers Stanley Ruiz, Jinggoy Buensuceso and Wataru Sakuma.
In celebration of the United Nations’ proclamation of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based technologies, Manila FAME tapped these three ”gypset” designer-artists with uncommon design instincts to give their own interpretation of the age-old interplay of light and shadow through their own designs.
“They are all of same shape, yet they are different. One shape transformed into multiple and distinct works through the utilization of the uniqueness of various materials, each with their own strengths just waiting to be realized. My own understanding of each material, a personal level of relationship, manifested in each and every piece.” – Wataru Sakuma
“The modular pieces allow for exploration, combination, play, reconstruction. The design presents limitless potential and infinite possibilities.” – Stanley Ruiz
“We have to start thinking differently about lighting and how we can manipulate it. We can bend it and throw it but the big difference is when you marry it with lines and organic forms to create a theatrical play of light and shadow. This is when we are brought to another dimension and into an elevated experience.” – Jinggoy Buensuceso
Working closely with a select group of manufacturers, these designers found themselves undertaking personal passion projects to bring to life their ideas and highlight the expertise of their partner companies. Wataru Sakuma worked with CSM Philippines, E. Murio and South Sea Veneer while Stanley Ruiz worked with Venzon Lighting, Triboa Bay Living, Bon-Ace Fashion Tools, MASAEco and Prado Filipino Artisans. Jinggoy Buensuceso worked with That One Piece, Industria Home, Shell Arts, and Cancio (furniture).
Slated at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City on 13-16 March 2015, Manila FAME is the country’s premier trade platform for exports and design.
